There was confusion in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital on Monday when a 56-year-old trader, Mrs. Bosede Ajayi, reportedly slumped and died at the popular Bisi Market following altercation between her and a trader, Mrs. Aminat Raheem.

The two petty traders were reportedly fighting over a space where they could display their wares at the market.

They were said to have engaged each other in war of words over who owned the space in contention.

An eyewitness said the two women came to trade at the market which holds every five days.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, who confirmed the incident, said it was a case of
homicide.

He, however, said, an eyewitness called Mr. Marcus Adedayo said that the altercation did not degenerate into physical fight.

Babayemi said that Raheem, 40, was arrested and detained at the Okesa Police Station in Ado Ekiti.

The PPRO said preliminary investigations confirmed that the matter had settled between the duo before she slumped.

Ajayi was said to have slumped and died while displaying her wares.

Babayemi said the woman was immediately rushed to the Comprehensive Health Centre at Okeyinmi, Ado Ekiti, where she eventually gave up the ghost.

Babayemi said medical experts confirmed that the victim had died.

“This prompted our men to immediately arrest the suspect.

“I can confirm to you that the suspect is in our custody at Okesa Police Station. The woman struggled with another person and shortly after, she fainted”, he said.

He added that the remains of the victim had been deposited at the morgue at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti while investigations were ongoing on the cause of her death.

  1. The painful part of this issue is that the police may just keep this woman in custody without carrying out a post mortem which should actually give a lead to what may have caused the death of the deceased.
