Don’t judge Chelsea by West Brom draw – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho claims he must wait to discover whether Chelsea missed a trick at West Bromwich Albion or collected another useful point.

The Blues were far from their best at The Hawthorns on Tuesday, with their usual creativity lacking despite fielding Oscar, Willian, Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto’o.

Their goal in a 1-1 draw with the struggling Baggies came from the unlikely source of full-back Branislav Ivanovic, who found himself in the right place at the right time to convert moments before the interval.

It looked for long periods as though that effort would be enough to send Chelsea four points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but Victor Anichebe stepped off the bench to restore parity three minutes from time.

Mourinho is refusing to read too much into a draw away from home, but admits that only time will tell whether his side are left to curse their inability to see off a side scrapping for their top flight lives.

Asked if he felt Chelsea should have won the game, the Portuguese coach told Sky Sports: “I think so, but they had a strong reaction.

“In the last 20 minutes they put us under pressure and they scored a goal as a consequence of that. Maybe they deserved that point.

“A point is a point and let’s see at the end of the season if we’ve lost two or won one.”

He added: “I thought the game for 60 minutes was perfectly in our hands. For 60 minutes they didn’t put one foot in our box and we had lots of situations, I’m not saying clear situations, but ones where we controlled the game.

“In the last 20 minutes they put pressure on us, the team stayed back and a defensive mistake is a goal. Maybe they deserved a point.”

Manchester City and Arsenal will now get the opportunity to clamber to the summit when they take to the field on Wednesday, but Mourinho is refusing to read too much into league standings at this stage.

He said: “I don’t read. I go match-after-match, as I keep saying.

“The next match is against Everton and we have to try to win the three points, nothing more than that.”
