Centenary celebration, a dance on the graves of students murdered by Boko Haram - Atiku

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar says the centenary celebration currently going on in Abuja to mark the 100 years of Nigeria's Amalgamation is disrespectful to the memory of the recently murdered FGC students in Yobe state.

Futhermore, the families of late Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Chief Gani Fawehinmi have rejected the Post Humous Awards the Federal Government is to bestow on both Gani and Fela at a Centenary Awards which will took place on Friday at the Banquet Hall State House in Abuja.

The Fawehinmi family say nominating their father in the same category with former Military Head of State, General Gbadamosi Babangida and the recent killing of students in Yobe state are their reasons for turning down the award.

Femi Kuti who spoke on behalf of the Kuti Family say they have not yet received any apologies from the government for the burning of the Kalakuta Republic in 1977 and also for the killing of his grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and so cannot receive the award.

The family of the late M.K.O Abiola also rejected the posthumous Centenary award to the winner of the 1993 Nigeria’s presidential election.

Kola Abiola, the eldest son of the late politician and businessman, told newsmen on Friday that the award was “not appropriate.”

“For us, what the government is doing is laudable. But our family will only accept what is appropriate. If what they are trying to give him is a gold award for the centenary, we don’t consider that to be appropriate,” Mr. Abiola said.

“With a gold centenary award, it means we have not left where we were when they tried to rename the University of Lagos after him. We said then that it was inappropriate,” he added.

Other Nigerians awarded are

Sir Samuel Manuwa, Professor John Edozien, Dr Moses Majekodunmi, Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe, Professor Latunde Odeku, Professor Nelson Oyesiku and Dr. Funmi Olopade, Professor Oyin Olurin, Professor Orishejolomi Thomas, Chief MKO Abiola, Professor Bello Osagie, Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti, Professor Ade Elebute, Dr Akinola Maja, Professor Femi Williams, Professor Ambrose Alli, Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Professor Ishaya Audu, Professor Oladele Ajose and Professor Tola Adebonojo, Chief Micheal Adenuga among others.

  3. For once, I agree with Atiku. At worst, a postponement if not outright cancellation would have been more appropriate in the circumstance. Just my thinking

  9. Atiku is a messenger of political animals. Am just wondering whether before Jona became Presidents, other presidents did not at one point celebrated after a disaster happened. Everybody is just capitalising on 2015. If this thing had happened in 2011 wen d new govt just started, wud Fashola had renamed dat hall Peace Hall? Becos election don near now, he want make people see say APC dey human hearted. Abegi, make they go siddon.

i really do sympathise with d dead. But nobody seemed to remember d Odi massacre too. Did Fashola say anything about it then. Did Atiku say anything about it den. Lets stop being, i don't knw what to say.

as ordinary nigerians, lets just pray we c three square meal to eat a day. Daz all
