President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed managing director of Zenith Bank,Mr Godwin Emefiele as the new governor of Central Bank.

It can be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday sacked Mallam Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati said Jonathan had found out that Sanusi’s tenure as the CBN governor has been characterised by acts of financial recklessness and misconduct which are inconsistent with his administration’s vision.

However, many Nigerians believe the CBN governor was axed because he exposed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, as an harbinger of corruption and financial mismanagement, diverting huge federal revenues accruing to the nation from the sale of crude oil.

Mr. Sanusi says as much as $20 billion oil money is missing.

Sanusi however on his arrival from Niger promised to challenge Mr President in court concerning his sack. In his words..

|"I will not go back to it. I think it will be in the interest of the institution for the courts to establish once and for all if the president has the powers to do this. If it is not challenged, the next Central Bank Governor cannot be independent with fear of being suspended by a politician. I do plan to have the courts confirm if indeed that authority exists and I will challenge it"

NigerianEYE also reported that some officials of the State Security Service, SSS, seized the travelling documents of suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, shortly after he arrived Lagos from Niger, where he had gone to attend a meeting of governors of central banks in the West African sub-region.

He was released later, while his travelling documents remains seized.

  1. If only GEJ was advised that what CBN needed is an astute economist and not just a banker, we would have been better for it. CBN headship goes beyond dealing with commercial banks. It encompasses the generality of our economy. Bankers will only concentrate on Commercial Bank issues and their interest only to mess up the entire economy. Sanusi actually tried. Let the new man build on the good policies of his predecessor.

  16. I have very high regard to the appointment of Mr. Emefiele as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. My disappointment to the appointment is the fact that Mr. Emefiele is an Igboman which goes along way to confirm that the Igbos now headed practically all the financial structures of Nigeria. I am not a tribalist but my concern is why this appointment when the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Security Exchange Commission, Ministry of Finance, etc are all headed by the same tribe! I would advise the President to review my observation with good intention never to have the belief of tribal sentiment. There are other capable Nigerians even among the minority tribes in the country. In passing, I pray for the best man to handle the affairs of the Central Bank of Nigeria because Nigeria is not alone and the entire world is watching the out come of the suspension of Mallam Lamido Sanusi.
