Army closes border with Cameroun

The military said yesterday it had shut hundreds of kilometres of Nigeria’s border in Adamawa State with Cameroon to stop Islamic extremists using the country as a haven and launch pad for attacks.

Brig. Gen. Rogers Nicholas of the 23rd Armored Brigade told reporters that he was exercising emergency powers because it is “imperative” to seal the border between Cameroon and Adamawa State against illegal crossings.

He said Customs and immigration officials are working with soldiers and police “to ensure that nothing crosses into Nigeria.” Large stretches of that porous border are generally left unpatrolled.

The border between Borno State and Cameroon, which Nigerian troops and a jet bomber crossed last month in pursuit of extremists, apparently remains open.

The move will affect hundreds of traders who routinely cross the border.

  4. grate apology to the our beloved traders, they should understand that saving lives are more than trading. I wish to say the closing of the boarder is not the end of the war against extremist, northerners are good people but the influx of the unknown people from other neibouring countries have messed up the integrity of the nothernerns, now, government need to start a project that will build bariers acrross the boarder with electronic devices attached for proper monitoring and survelance, it is then we can talk about sensor and finger prints of all Nigerians, and all those who seek to legally cross our boarder for businesses or tourism, then it will be easy to track any criminal. I wonder what all the past presidents where doing and thinking about, non of them ever thought of boarder and internal security, than what are they governing for several years... selfish ineterest in quote, tribalism in quote and religious riverary in quote. All these things are criminal in nature, for any civilised country with civilised people, any one who is tribalistic, religious fanatic and engage in trism is a high criminal at the highest order, note and quote, any of these 3 items offender need to be arrested and dealt with, for Nigeria to move forward and remain one with a better growth for all parts, these 3 things need criminalised.

  5. We want to see effective action, not statements of intent which like the tale of the fool is full of sound and fury but signifying nothing. Shakespare presumably had the NA in mind when he wrote that!
