Amaechi added that his administration was ready to cooperate with the police to restore law and order as long as they (police) were ready to be non-partisan and neutral.
The governor spoke on Thursday when Ogunsakin and other top police officers in the state paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
He told the police commissioner to support the people of the state and not the Peoples Democratic Party or the All Progressives Congress.
Amaechi said, "We are willing to cooperate with the police to restore law and order. The only thing we need is for the police to have the courage to restore law and order.
"The police must do whatever it takes to bring sanity back. The Rivers State Government will assist the Nigeria Police in any way they require.
"Don't support PDP, and don't support APC. Just support the Rivers people. Any order that is illegal from the Rivers State Government; please, don't obey.
"What we want is a neutral police commissioner that is firm and understands that the state needs to accommodate everybody, and not one that loves to be in any of the political parties. I must congratulate you; the plans you have for the state are also well thought out."
The governor recalled the cordial relationship his administration enjoyed with the military and the police when he took over power in 2007.
He narrated how his administration had supported the police in providing Armoured Personnel Carriers, bulletproof vests, scholarship programmes and primary health centres as a way of motivating policemen in combating crime in the state.
Earlier in his remark, Ogunsakin explained that it was necessary for the governor and the police to work hand in hand towards enhancing the security of lives and property in the state.
"The President is the Chief Security Officer of the federation, while the Inspector-General of Police is the chief law enforcement officer of the federation.
"Also, in a state, the governor is the Chief Security Officer and the commissioner of police is the chief law enforcement officer of the state.
"This relationship is definitely best appreciated when it is harnessed to ensure peace and tranquillity in the state," Ogunsakin said.
He expressed his intention to partner with the communities in the state and other established institutions, including relevant stakeholders and other sister security agencies.
"Consequently, I want to use this medium to sound a note of warning to all criminals in the state to either have a change of mind and become law-abiding citizens or relocate from Rivers State immediately.
"I encourage all law abiding citizens of the state to go about their business," the CP added.
