REVEALED: 'How Stella Oduah forged MBA degree' - Sahara Reporters

Stella Oduah, Nigeria’s minister of aviation faces a fresh integrity scrutiny over her claim that she obtained an MBA degree from an American university.

A Saharareporters report today said her claim has been punctured by the United States school which supposedly awarded it.

“Her resume, which she presented to the Senate as a ministerial nominee in 2011, indicated she obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from St. Paul’s College Lawrenceville, Virginia, United States.

“But SaharaReporters has learned from the President of the college that it has never in its 125-year history had a graduate school or graduate program.

“The Provost Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the Vice President of Institutional Development said in response to our inquiries, “We don’t offer any graduate programs here.”

“Similarly, the school’s website states: “Saint Paul’s College is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate [bachelor’s] degrees.” There is no mention of graduate degrees.

“The Minister’s documentation shows she received an undergraduate degree in accounting from the college in 1982, but Dr. Claud Flythe, St. Paul’s current president, could neither confirm nor deny this during a phone conversation with SaharaReporters. Further verification with the Office of Alumni Affairs is also currently impossible, the school said, because the college has been closed since June 2013 to loss of its accreditation.

“[Oduah] realized very early in life the indispensability of a sound education in her growth plans in life and therefore pursued her education with all diligence and sense of purpose,” her documents claimed, adding that a determination “to have the best education at the highest level” prompted her stay at the Virginia college in 1983 for the MBA programme.

“As her public relations machinery marched on, in December 2012 The Sun newspaper published an article headlined “Stella Oduah: An Amazon of transformation,” which lauded her “MBA from St Paul’s College, Lawrenceville Virginia USA.” The story also praised her for being an official who brought her “rich educational background to bear on the aviation sector by automating revenue centers in all the agencies and parastatals to boost their revenue profile and enhance transparency and accountability in the system.”

SaharaReporters similarly broke in October, the story that Mrs. Oduah, a former campaign manager for President Goodluck Jonathan, purchased two bulletproof BMW cars worth $ 1.6 Million (N255m) through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, for her own use.

The House of Representatives, after a probe of the scandalous purchase, has asked President Jonathan to ‘review her status’ as minister, another way of saying that she should be sacked.

  5. This woman should save herself and family further embarassment by resigning her appointment and withdrawing from politics on its entirety. Her husband should be able to talk some gaddem senses into her brain! If this latest news is true, then we shouldn't be surprised over her fraudulent activities in the aviation sector. But come to think of it, she's actually trying to recup what she spent during the president's re-election!

  6. What's the rush for? Saharareporters should've been patient to confirm whether she's even a graduate of accounting than coming to feed the public with uncertainties of unconfirmed graduates status. Investigative journalism should really be conclusive lest it appear that the report is out to disparage the minister at all cost.

  7. If this report, particularly, saharareporters wanted to be fair to this woman called Stella Oduah, they would've elicited her comments on their findings, and included same in their report, and then allow the public to react based on their BALANCED reportage. Pls media, always hear d other side b4 publishing. It's a fair principle of natural justice.

  10. Oh! Nigerians, where in the word of God, do you see or read that God recommended complaints, insults, bitterness, or its likes as a way of BUILDING people. Christianity is simply 'Sinners turned Saints by God's grace-JESUS' Who or what positive change has been introduced into this nation by the above formular? Lets know that we ALL like sheep has gone astray. Who is qualified in God's sight to cast the first stone? Lets change the approach in its entire form and watch what happens.

Pls, before you point error in my comment, be sure that GOD approves of it! Thanks

  11. Leave the woman joor, the Chicago guy leading the APC cant even produce ordinary WAEC certificate from Ibadan Government College.
Yet you said the college closed in June, 2013 but you still spoke to the college president? When did you speak to the president? Does a closed school still have a functioning president?
Another crook in APC stole his client's money, was derobed by Maryland Bar Association, yet he's still in the house.

  17. Ladies and Gentlemen what's this fuss about certificates. It's only in this country we talk about certificates not about what one has upstairs. Go about the streets you can only see bunch of certificates holders that are not certified in the head. If she is capable of running the ministry with results then to hell with certificate without results. It's high time, we began to pay more respect to what a person can do rather than the caliber of certificate he/she is presenting. Bill Gate of America for example is a school drop out who today can employ any professor of today,so what are talking about? Please live Mrs. Oduah alone and judge her with her performance in the position appointed.

    1. U don't get it, do u? Bottom line is that she lied about acquiring a certificate which u believe is unimportant. If its really about what u have upstairs, why didn't she just tell the senate that she is certified in the head instead of presenting a spurious MBA. Another thing, she also lied under oath while taking her oath of office. Her foundation has, therefore, been destroyed. Thus, no matter what 'good' u believe she has done, it will add up to nothing for her.

  20. This is what they want in this country, our young children who suffered to get genuine certificates are left to room about in the streets, some Governors and so many office holders are involved in this nefarious act too. More are yet to be uncovered.

  21. stupid comments from empty heads. I dont support worshiping certificates too but the position of that woman requires certificate as prerequisite. I mean a primary school drop out or a bus conducted could as we be minister if certificate is pushed aside. Ethnicity apart, that woman should not just be sacked but be prosecuted as well if some ethnic group will not term it MASSIVE KILLING OR GENOCIDE again. Funny people!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. nigerians love this kind of news and that is why saharareporters put it on net so that some idiots will derail from their target and start commenting rubbish even those who read without undastding comments more. I tire for dis country.

  23. What happened to Tinubu (Chicago) scandal, Orji Uzor Kalu (Uturu) scandal, or even Oshiomole scandal? I am sure if you subject all the honourables and excellencies to scrutiny, you will find out that most of them forged their certificates.
The question I want to ask is were they not properly scrutinised before they ascended to their exalted positions? This question should be directed to INEC and the DISHONOURABLE Members of Legislatives.
Oduah is not to blame, "Whether she go school or she no go school" that one no concern anybody provided she de deliver dividend of demo-CRAZY. Make Naija people go hold House of Reps dem wey give am pass mark for ministerial appointment responsible.

  24. on Oduah
The President and House members are elected and impeachable. It is increasingly obvious that Ms Oduah is an inconvenient person in GEJ government, in more ways than one. If she cannot do the honorable thing and resign then GEJ should sanitize his government and set her and similar (Ministers and advisers) aside. She could still do a lot of backroom job for GEJ, including tutoring (teaching qualification may not be needed here) others especially if her experience and specialism are so valuable. GEJ does not need this much distraction, he needs to govern this country to greatness and achieve greatness himself. Nigeria is 160 million people and choices do exist. Long live Nigeria!
