The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has admitted that there was shortage of electricity supply to some parts of the country during the yuletide.
He however gave assurances that everything necessary was been done to normalise power supply in parts of the country where outages had been experienced in the past few days and weeks.
Nebo, who expressed regrets over the poor power situation in parts of Lagos and a few other areas during the festive period, attributed the development to gas supply challenges.
He stated that the challenges were “being squarely addressed by the Federal Government.”
Nebo, in a statement by the Federal Ministry of Power, explained that the deterioration in the quantity of supply in Lagos was a direct consequence of the compounded gas shortage resulting from the recent extensive vandalism of the Escravos Lagos (western axis) gas pipeline.
He said repair work on the pipeline, earlier completed last week, was taking a few more days due to the discovery by engineers, of at least two more leaks in the process of pressurising, prior to putting the pipeline back to use.
“Completion of repairs and re-commissioning of the pipeline, earlier planned for this week, is now expected to be achieved before the end of January,” the statement noted.
Nebo said although an increase in generation was recorded this week, Lagos received a maximum load of 816megawatts on Sunday December 29, 2013, less than the required minimum of 1,000MW. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
