LASU: It’s not possible to get quality education at N25, 000 – Lagos Govt

Apparently disturbed by the several crises which led to the closure of the Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State Government has again responded to the question over the increment of school fees saying quality tertiary education cannot be cheap.

Speaking on the appropriation for Lagos State University, LASU, Commissioner for Economic Planning, Ben Akabueze said, the state government will spend N9.2 billion for capital and recurent expenditure in the state university in 2014.

He said: “LASU is not funded by the tuition fees paid by the students. It is not possible in today’s world to get quality tertiary education at N25,000. Many Nigerians pay more than that to fund their children’s education at the primary education level. Government around the world spends more money funding basic education than tertiary education. This is to create platform for more people to be educated.”

“We have N9.2 billion that would be spent on LASU in 2014. Out of the N9.2 billion, N2.6 is for capital expenditure while N6.6 billion is for recurrent expenditure.”

The commissioner added that the state budgeted the sum of N2.7 billion for Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, AOCOED, Ijanikin, Micheal Otedola College of Primary Education, MOCOPED; N1.2 billion and Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH; N3.6 billion.

  1. Agreed that quality tertiary education can not be accessed with 25,000 naira. But i tell you, most Britsh students do not pay a dime for education and their educational system is still ranked topped. most Nigerians of which i am one of them paid massively for their education. in this light, it is possible to get free education in Nigeria when the governmnent become sincere and focused.

  2. Let it be on record that APC who boast of free education for all Nigerians cannot even guarantee just Lagos state of free education. Lagos state is the foremost APC controlled state,if it can't work in Lagos now then don't promise us 2015.

  5. U people should start by paying your tax and see if u wouldn't get free education. In d uk, everyone contribute to the education of others by paying their tax promptly in a corrupt free environment

  6. Any government that want the economy to progress will not promise free tertiary education. Primary and secondary education is what you can get free in developed countries. University education can not be aquired with 25,000 Naira anywhere in the world. Stop playing politics with your future, face reality. most of you pay up to 100,000 Naira per year for primary education without complaining. If you are not happy with Lagos ruled APC, go to any PDP ruled state university for 25,000 Naira.

  7. Mr. Governor, I think you hold a wrong view of what quality education is. Just to tell you that we can not get quality education even if the fees are $25, 000. Ask yourself, how many Lagosians whose students are in LASU can afford what you are charging? Yet no APC chieftain has raised a voice against this.
