Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako on Tuesday said that despite several denials, President Goodluck Jonathan signed a document agreeing to serve for a single term.
Nyako said this in an interview with journalists in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
He explained that genuine leaders were men of honour who would be sincere to their colleagues and the society in general, no matter the circumstance.
The governor said, “In the first place, when that agreement was brought for me to sign, I told them that this President (Jonathan), in the agreement signed in the year 2003, he was number 73.
“Did we not agree under (ex-President Olusegun) Obasanjo that the term 2007 and 2011 belong to the North?
“He was number 73 as deputy governor of Bayelsa State, so when they came, they said I should sign, they said he had agreed that he would not contest in the year 2015.
“In the first place, I said I did not believe him because he didn’t give his pledge for the agreement signed in the year 2003. They said ah, ah, Baba Maimangoro. I said ok, I will sign. So I signed.”
When asked who brought the agreement for him to sign, he said his northern colleagues, including the Niger State governor, Babangida Aliyu; and his Katsina State counterpart, Ibrahim Shema, among others.
The Adamawa State governor noted that ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo led Jonathan to ask him (Nyako) to support Jonathan, who he said had agreed to serve for only one term.
“Obj (Obasanjo) will tell you, he came here and pleaded with me to support Jonathan in 2011. He came here and virtually took an oath to serve only one term,” Nyako said.
Asked if Obasanjo came in company with Jonathan, Nyako replied “Absolutely! That he was going to serve for only one term.”
He said that when Jonathan went to Obasanjo to seek for his support for 2015, the former President reminded him of the commitment he made.
Nyako further said, “The Niger State governor has the agreement. We want to deal with people with honour, not people who want to drag us into civil war because of impunity, because of lawlessness, because of not fulfilling their pledges, that will only take us to civil war.
“Leaders must be honest with their colleagues and the greater society. I have my craw craw from the first civil war and if there is need to develop another craw craw in another civil war I will stand by.”
Aliyu’s spokesman, Danladi Ndayabo, could not be reached for comments as at the time of filing this report.
A response to the text message sent to him was still being awaited as at the time of filing this report.
The Presidency has denied in the past that the President signed any agreement not to seek reelection.
Nyako also said the declaration of a state of emergency in Adamawa State was purely political because the state had the security situation under control.
He explained that the state was not even among the first seven states, out of a list of 12, which had serious security challenges but that the President skipped several states to pick on his state for inexplicable political reasons. Did he sign the agreement with the people or with looters.
ReplyDeleteGEJ signed a single term pact when he was the deputy Governor of Bayelsa state?. Now the deceit by the gang-up north has been revealed!.how did he know he would be the president talkless of going for a second term. Was there any revelation that he would become a govetnor, then choosen to be a vice president then assume leadership cos Yar Adua would be elected, and later died while in office????.questions upon questions. This has clearly shown to nigerians that no such agreement existed. Thank you Governor for at last making us to know you all these while lying to nigerians. GEJ you have been vindicated and you now have our support to continue and complete the transformation.
ReplyDeleteGov. Nyako, please stop campaigning for civil war cos by d grace of Allah all those calling for war will go with it bi izinillah. So preach peaceful co-existence islam preaches.thnk u
ReplyDeleteYes 2007 and 2011 belong to the north but that was truncated by natural occurance with no fault of anyone°. It can still be negotiated again if we sincerely love one another and be unitied. If Nyako was in GEJ's shoes, would he had forfeited his second term when he is constitutionally empowered?. Do to others what you want others do unto you. This can be re- negotiated to start in2019. Lets be properly guided and reasons like human being
ReplyDeleteSo the security situation in Adamawa is under conyrol by the state Government. That means the series of attacks in the state is sponsored and approved by the state. Now I know you clearly. You see black and call it white.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, who told you a few of you have the right to decide and sign away the country to anyone who agrees with your terms?
Thirdly, what has a 2003 agreement as a deputy governor got to do with 12 years downthe lline? Meaning your group had the plan to eliminate Yar Adua even before he contested.
Your cabal has failed.
Fellow Nigerians, we must deliver the country from PDP and APC. Let us speak with our vote and resist electoral magic while civil war mongers go and scratch their craw craw
This man should shut up his mouth. You few politicians are claiming as if you own Nigeria. Why should you bring such a treacherous agreement for him to sign? GEJ has to become treacherous too so that treacherous people meeting a treacherous man everything becomes treacherousomiasis. An addage says "if a treacherous man dies a treacherous man buries him" What the people of Nigeria know is the constitution?
ReplyDeleteWhen Gen Sani Abacha Called for Constitutional conference in 1996, one of the content of the botched constitution was the rotation of Presidency among the six geopolitical zones. However you Politicians-you want to become president sharp sharp- you cannot afford to wait for the rotation- out of sheer greed threw away a carefully thought out constitution of 1996 and came up with 1999 constitution which did not recognise rotation.
In my own view, before GEJ steps down rotation of presidency should be entrenched in the constitution. The Zone sequence should be clearly stated with SS- last, NW-2nd to last, SW-3rd to last. If this is not done I am affraid one Zone may perpetuate itself in power because politicians cannot be trusted.
I agree with anonymous 10:22, If 1996 constitution had been adopted, since it gives room for multiple Vice Presidents each from 6 geopolitical zones, the demise of President Yar'adua would not have been a problem since the VP from Yar'adua's Zone will complete the term.
