Court ordered Secondary school student to pay N50,000 for stealing N500 kola nuts



A secondary school student, Kolawole Abiodun, 20, on Tuesday admitted before an Omu-Aran Upper Area Court in Kwara that he stole kola nuts worth N500.



Abiodun, who lives at Isanlu area of Ilofa, headquarters of Oke-Ero Local Government Area, was arraigned on a two-count charge of trespassing and theft.

The Prosecutor, Insp Abibat Ogbaru, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sunday at a kola nut farm in Igbo-Ijemo, Ilofa.

Ogbaru said that the accused had about 10. a.m. entered the farm belonging to 67-year-old Bakare Olaoye.

She said that the accused was caught while plucking the kola nuts and handed over to security men.

The prosecutor added that the accused was arrested while in possession of a knife and other items.

She said the offences contravened sections 287 and 346 of the Penal Code.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges.

The judge, Mr Adeyemi Fagbemi, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case to Feb. 11 for further hearing. (NAN)

  2. what an irrelevance in d nigerian judicial system!! isn't it funny@ al?how cud a person b acused of 500 naira theft & pay #50,000 n a surety with d like sum.isnt it ridiculous!!nobody is advocatin/encouraging theft,wether small or big,theft is theft agreed,but if is d case of any of these corupt leaders indicted say 4 instance #1 bilion,court wud ask 4 #500,000.what a country of ours!

  4. Strange times!! What a contrast! Where the likes of alamesigha are been pardoned after all the loots stolen including impersonating a woman(dressed like one while sneaking out of london) there u are proclaiming such a judgment can't he be flogged or be sent to do some community service? Well Mr judge, you will be judged too.

  5. Mr judge shaMe on u!! If the boy has 50k will he go and steal kolanut? Can't u toe the footstep of ur fellow judge that fined a woman who stole 150k worth of shirt and laptop to pay 8k and desist froM the act?
