The People’s Republic of China has said it does not export fake goods to Nigeria.
The Chinese Consul General, Dr. Liu Xianfa, said this when asked by our correspondent to respond to allegations by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control that a large portion of the fake goods in Nigeria emanated from China.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, had said during a press conference that India and China accounted for most of the fake drugs coming into the country.
Orhii said while the Indian government had been supporting the agency in the fight against drug counterfeiting, China had been playing a mere passive role
However, while speaking with our correspondent during a farewell reception held in his honour in Lagos on Tuesday, Xianfa said, “No, fake drugs and goods don’t come from China.”
Xianfa subsequently refused to answer any further questions.
Also, the Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, who also spoke with our correspondent at the event, said Nigeria had benefitted a great deal from China.
Akinterinwa said through the Memorandum of Understanding both countries had signed, Nigeria as well as China, had benefitted from the relationship.
He said, “China has done well by signing agreements with Nigeria. China has been able to participate in critical sectors of our economy. Even at the NIIA, there is a special programme with the kicker, ‘China Institute of Contemporary International Relations.’
“Also, China has agreed to build a 21-storey building at the NIIA and plans have already been set in motion as the deal is almost completed. These are some of the ways Nigeria is also benefitting from China.”
While reacting to agitations as regards Nigeria not being acknowledged properly at the memorial held in honour of the late South Africa President, Nelson Mandela, recently, the NIIA boss said Nigeria was still the heartbeat of the black race.
“Like the Lagos State Speaker of the House of Assembly said, Nigeria is the heartbeat of the black race and we don’t need to be acknowledged or commended to prove that. President Goodluck Jonathan’s job is to pilot the country and prevent it from crashing and Nigeria will continue to lead,” Akinterinwa said.
