The Federal Government has threatened not to pay any lecturer who failed to resume for lectures on Monday, 9 December, the new deadline issued to the striking lecturers to resume for work or face sack.
The government yesterday shifted the deadline it gave the lecturers from 6 to 9 December, to honour the late ASUU president, Festus Iyayi, who died in an accident on his way to attend a meeting of ASUU in Kano.
The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, who announced the new date while addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday said any lecturer who failed to resume work after the expiration of the new deadline would not have his or her salary arrears paid.
“You cannot pay someone who has failed to resume work. You are on strike and you want to be paid? What if some has already left the system? Some of our very bright lecturers may have got jobs elsewhere.”
Okojie said government, as employer of labour, could not fold its arms while the institutions remained shut at the detriment of students.
Okojie explained that “Government decided to shift the deadline after it received notification of Prof. Festus Iyayi’s funeral rites slated for between Dec. 5 and 7.
According to Okojie, the decision is also to avoid a situation where government and ASUU will have to deal with the ultimatum during the funeral of the former ASUU President.
According to Okojie, the order does not require students to commence lectures immediately.
“The school environment had to be made habitable for both students and the entire staff of the universities.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteNigerian's need to know that Asuu has been bought by the opposition and the same group of people behind bokoharam. That is why asuu has refused to call off the strike despite all efforts on the part of government. Asuu is now creating unnecessary hurdles to prolong the strike.
ReplyDeleteGod is watching
Don't allow politicians fool you. The govt. Knows their aim. Why has they gone ahead to implement a set of "recommendations" instead of an "agreement"? This is how they fool Nigerians! They are paying 200bn and taking all these other steps because without a signed agreement, ASUU will not have legal grounds to go on strike if for example they fail to pay 200bn for 2014. They can go to court and declare any strike illegal because "recommendations" from the meeting with Jonathan is not tennable in a court of law like an "agreement". If you were ASUU, knowing this, would you call off the strike? So pls it is nothing political, the govt wants public sympathy because they know Nigerians are gullible. That is the main issue prolonging the strike, forget about all the other demands of ASUU. To those who are conversant with the law, not signing an agreement with ASUU before they call of the strike is the best way to avoid future strikes on the same issue. Be wise!
