Five artisans die in Kaduna building collapse

No fewer than five persons were crushed to death following the collapse of a building at Angwan Dosa, Kaduna North Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

It was gathered that the building was formerly owned by St. Faith Catholic Church before it was sold to one Alhaji Suleiman Danzaria.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the building was deserted in the wake of the 2011 political violence where the church was attacked forcing it to relocate to another part of the state. This led the church management to sell the property to Danzaria.

The owner of the property, it was further learnt, contracted the demolition of the building to one Alhaji Mohammed Idris, who employed some labourers to demolish the building.

“Alhaji Idris yesterday(Saturday)came to demolish the building, he came with about 25 labourers. They came after the monthly sanitation exercise and commenced work.

“However, we just heard some sound from where am sitting now only for us to rush down there to discover that the building had collapsed on the workers. They were demolishing the building manually. We expected that they would make use of heavy equipment. You can see what ignorance had caused,” he added.

It was learnt that while 10 of the workers escaped unhurt , four died on the spot and another died at a private hospital in the state.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna Sate Deputy Governor Ambassador Nuhu Bajoga, who visited the scene of the incident warned property owners in the state against using sub-standard equipment during construction.
