President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday in Abuja hit back at critics and opposition parties who have been “painting the administration bad” before the global community, saying they should not allow their selfish political ambition to destroy the country.
According to him, it was because of ambition that led to the “wrongful overthrow” of ex-President Shehu Shagari in 1983, adding that such criticisms were not constructive enough to challenge the development strides of the present administration.
The President, represented by the Minister of Information and Communication, Mr. Labaran Maku, sounded the warning during the third annual lecture and award ceremony of Nigerian Pilot Newspapers and Nigerian Newsworld Magazine.
Maku, who said Jonathan had even developed “thick skin against such criticisms”, however advised politicians to thread with caution as their actions could destabilise democractic structures already in place.
He said, “There is a difference between ambition and reality. Go for your ambition, nobody is disturbing you because it is free world. Go and compete, but don’t pull down this country called Nigeria because of your personal ambition. It is unacceptable.
“I think there is a difference between debates and insults. I reject insults and the fact that I am a public officer doesn’t give anybody the liberty to insult me. Most of the time you cannot detach the Office of the President and honour of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“There are people who are honestly trying to put things down for this country to move on. I think we can see the difference between facts and fiction. Let us not continue to behave as if we can pull down our own house; we as politicians and public servants should not behave as if we were picked on the streets. You don’t just go and pour acid on the faces of public officers.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteU are a servant to him, so u must support him. we are not surprise.
ReplyDeleteWell done Mr Maku for the message well delivered. The truth of the matter is that your master is driving the vehicle with Nigerians as passengers in a wrong direction and he has to be cautioned before we go too far and to end up in a lagoon . God forbid. No one wants to destroy Nigeria as you claimed.
ReplyDeleteLabaran, you are a little bit sensible here but tell Abbati to be responsible at people. He who insult somebody 's father is not debating his.
ReplyDeleteYou say Shagari's overthrow was wrongful? The scales just fell of my eyes, kai!!!
ReplyDeleteYes I hated military rule, but Shagari's govt, much like Jonathan's was clueless on how to manage Nigeria. Much like Jonathan, Shagari was a weak leader who had no clue on what it took to lead Nigeria nor did the people in the then NPN know what to do. All they knew how to do was shout "NPN Super Power, One Nation One Destiny" Much like PDP's "PDP Power to the fifle (oops sorry people).
Buhari and Idiagbon brought Nigeria back to life and if not for their high handedness the evil genius Babangida would not have had the opportunity to take us back into the abyss.
Jonathan should wake up and smell the coffee, He needs to sit up and shape up. It is he and his kinsmen (Asari and Edwin Clarke) who want to destroy Nigeria becos of their selfish ambition to impose him (Jonathan) on Nigerians
Mr. President Sir, I beg to declare my unalloyed loyalty and astute followership as well as hope and confidence in Nigeria, our dear God's given beloved country. Sir, given a chance, following from what my mother used to tell us, "no two homes are alike", in the phase of this premise, I beg to think that no two government are same. Upon the foregoing therefore, it point to a frenzy indicator to think of the fate of the second republic to befall the era of any governance. Are we not today accepted into committee of nations? Did we enjoy such par under the junta? Except my memory fails me, I would readily say; NO. Be that as it may, it is the prayers of Nigerians that as every second ticks to take man to the next level, the contrary should not be fate of Nigeria, our country. In the event where this is our prayers from the echelons to the basement, then the obvious stands out, that all of us should strive to do the best in whatever is placed before us to do. Criticism in all spheres of life is the juice of progress. Permit me to recall that my mother used to warn that we should not quarrel or fight when our friends abuse us of one bad habit or the other, but that we should rather make efforts to do away with such ills. This being the case, one should listen to his/her inner man, tell himself the truth and face critics eye ball to eye ball. Rest assured of the fact that one can only go to equity with clean hands. Head or tail a critic may not be an enemy but at some point an adviser.
