Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aeegbesola, has declared a state of emergency in schools in the state to curb the rising cases of violence among pupils.
The governor made the declaration while inaugurating a 27-man committee to investigate the level of moral decadence among the pupils as well as their teachers.
He said the declaration of state of emergency became necessary following the dangerous trend gangsterism was assuming among teenagers in the middle and high schools in the state.
The committee, which is headed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Land and Physical Planning, Dr. Ayoade Owoade, has the representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Muslim Communities, traditional religion worshipers, Nigeria Union of Teachers and All-Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools as members.
There have been cases of intra-schools clashes among secondary school pupils especially after the merger of some schools in the state.
Baptist Girls High School where pupils of Fakunle Comprehensive High School were merged with others has been witnessing series of crisis.
Recently, some Muslim youths also invaded Baptist High School, Ejigbo and beat up the principal.
Aregbesola said, “The situation is so terrible to the extent that we must declare a state of emergency on middle and high school education in the state of Osun if not in Nigeria.
“This situation made us to believe that they (the schools) were breeding gangsters, mindless people and never-do-well in the school considering the dexterity of the violence and mindless attack against their peers.”
He added that the population of the trouble makers might be small but such violence could derail the ongoing education transformation.
The committee’s terms of reference, according to the governor, include revealing the level of moral decadence and indiscipline in public schools and recommending a long term approach to curb the menace.
The governor urged the committee to find out the possible causes of bad habits and gross indiscipline without sparing any stakeholders who could include teachers, principals and inspectors.
The governor, who lamented the horrible situation, said he was inaugurating the committee with all sense of responsibility and urged the committee to handle the assignment as a mater of destiny for the Yoruba race and for the justification of the huge resources invested in education. Aregbesolas legacy since he got to power is to breed violent islamic extremists like himself among hitherto moderate muslims in osun. That is typical . Whenever an islamic extremist gets to power forget about real development. Ask yourself.. osun students have been dwelling peacefully all these years until he got there with his dubious education policy. He should first see a phychiatrist and then direct his violence committe at his muslim groups that have been causing the violence.
