Most of the victims in Kano metropolis are on admission in the government-owned Zana Hospital.
The high number of the cholera patients has over stretched the facilities in the hospital with the result that many of them have no bed and consequently have to make do with space on ward floors.
A Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Tijjani Hussein, confirmed the development to reporters.
He said that the crisis is escalating at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) as it cannot alone accommodate the increasing number of patients being referred to the hospital.
He also explained that some cases taken to the IDH are not cholera-related and therefore advised people to rush their relatives who are vomiting or passing stool to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the state government has appealed to residents to report any case of gastroenteritis at the nearest hospital with a view to controlling the cholera menace.
The State Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, at a meeting with health workers, told them to step up effort to ensure the mitigation of the crisis.
Represented by the Deputy Director Public Health and Disease Control, Tijjani Hussain, the commissioner urged residents of the state to always observe personal and environmental hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.
An earlier cholera outbreak in the state claimed 10 lives in Nasarawa and Dala local government areas, while another 70 persons were hospitalised within the week. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
