Zimbabwe orders Nigerians, other foreigners to close shops by Jan 1

Zimbabwean authorities say they have given foreign shop-owners mostly Nigerians and Chinese an ultimatum to shut down their businesses by Jan. 1.

A top official of the black empowerment ministry said only Zimbabweans had the right to run shops that have sprung up across the country and are termed foreign businesses targeted under the nation’s black empowerment laws, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reported Friday.

Those laws, passed in 2007, demand foreign businesses to cede 51 percent control to local blacks.

The foreign shop owners have been criticised for taking retail trade opportunities from Zimbabwean traders by selling cheap imports.

Poor townships and city flea markets have in recent years been inundated by shops run by foreigners.

According to state media, shop owners who fail to comply will be arrested.

  3. This clown and tyrant called Robert Mugabe has not yet learnt that this is not the way to approach commerce. He gave white owned farms to Zimbabwe blacks who lacked capital & experience on commercial farming, thereby destroying agriculture in Zimbabwe and ushering in massive starvation. Another of our several African tyrants that do not serve the country and continent any good.

  5. Yes u can call this great man any name u like but he did that in the interests of his citizens. Same is done in other countries of the world UK and US inclusive - their citizens come first in terms of everything, including allocation of jobs. Tell ur own clueless GEJ who prefer to handshake white and turn deaf ears to suffering of his folks to rather emulate him. I mean one should be good to oneself before attending to others. Common sense

  7. There is another name for this policy. It is called WORK PERMIT in advanced countries. Don't call the old man names. We respect elders in Africa whether they are right or wrong.
