The National Human Rights Commission has said it has yet to determine the health status of Clara, the wife of Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime.
An interim report of investigation on a petition in which Clara allegedly accused her husband of illegal detention and other forms of abuses, which the commission released on Friday, had suggested that the governor’s wife had health challenges.
Clara had faulted the report, alleging that it was meant to damage her reputation.
She also accused the commission of bias.
However, the commission, in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs and Communications, Muhammed Ladan, on Sunday explained that it had not determined Mrs. Chime’s health status.
The commission said it issued the statement to clarify the interim report.
Part of the statement reads, “The commission wishes to place it on record that it has never claimed to have established that Mrs. Chime has health challenges.
“The attention of the National Human Rights Commission has been drawn to media reports which suggested that the commission had established that Chime, suffers from health challenges.
“This implies that the commission is biased and has already taken a decision on her complaint, which is far from the truth.
“The National Human Rights Commission has yet to reach a determination on the petition received from Mrs. Chime.”
The commission added that Mrs. Chime’s petition was still being investigated.
“The complaint is currently being investigated and will be subjected to the commission’s Rules of Procedure.”
The commission further stressed that it “is a credible national institution that will never be biased or compromised in case management or any matter.
Continuing, the statement explained that “it became necessary for the commission to address the press on November 8, 2013, in respect of the complaint received from Mrs. Chime, because it had attracted considerable media attention and generated a lot of public interest.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
