We didn’t give ASUU ultimatum – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has weekend, said his government did not give the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, an ultimatum to resume work or be sacked.

Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held at Government House, Yenagoa, the President said, the Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision of the Committee of Vice Chancellors.

“We didn’t give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision.”

Jonathan also said the strike embarked upon by the ASUU was no longer a trade dispute , but a subversive action.

He said, “What ASUU is doing is no longer trade union. I have intervened in other labour issues before now, once I invite them they respond and after the meeting they take decision and call off the strike.

“At times we don’t even give them a long notice, unlike, in the case of ASUU that was given four days notice before the meeting. As you are meeting to resolve trade disputes, you expect the trade unions to get their officials ready.

“What was expected having met with the highest authorities in the land for long hours, was for ASUU to immediately issue statement within 12 or latest 24 hours , to state their position whether they were accepting government’s offer or not. And if they are not accepting they should state the reason for that.”

“But despite the fact that I had the longest meeting with ASUU in my political history, we did not start that meeting until around 2:00pm and the meeting ended the next day in the early hours. As far as the government of Nigeria was concerned, all the critical people that should be in a meeting were there, so what else do they want?

“After that they didn’t meet until one week, despite the fact that you met with the highest authority. It was unfortunate one of them, Prof. Iyayi died.

“The way ASUU has conducted the matter shows they are extreme and when Iyayi died, they now said the strike was now indefinite, our children have been at home for over five months.”

  2. Mr President stop that childish talk. Your minister Wike said it over radio Nigeria, and it was even reported in a verbatim form. Radio Nigeria can testify to that. ASUU responded to ur offer by giving 3 conditions to you via Wike, without taking these conditions to you, he simply said, they are outrageous. What are you telling NIGERIANS? ASUU are still murning their member who is to be burried on the 4th of Dec. it is that day you are deploying ur khaki people as if u want to rig election. Wake up from ur sleep and tell NIGERIANS the truth. TERSEER 4rm Makurdi

    1. Dem kwagh u or la, when has a minister been reduced to a spokesman for VCs? Does time has any correlation with quality? So we shud be clapping that Mr President sat with ASUU half a day even when we are not sure they actually endured him that long. I suggest is high time one visited Minna hilltop for some tutorials.

    1. Pls get your fact right! That isn't an agreement, it was an offer. Now ASUU want the offer but insisted on having an agreement with FG.

  4. What ASUU wants is simple! Govnment should honour its agreement with her citizens

When this strike was called, ASUU didn't want a half measure. They wanted a full implementation of an Agreement freely entered into by the Government of the federation. It is only in this country that an agreement is flouted and justified without qualms. It is a shame!

Is Mr President saying that if he entered into an agreement with say, the national assembly or even some of its officers, he can renege even one inch? Why should he treat an institution that produces the cream of our human capital with so much levity and disdain? Well, let ASUU go back to work and continue half-baking our children. My own children have found a better destination for their university education - yes, at Togo!

  7. Lying in high places. WIKE announced on Thursday, he only met with VC's on Friday, so how come they gave the order? I dont even blame the VC's because most of them got to the post by fraud and scheming. ASUU united we stand.

  8. Mr president did not tell us the outcome of his meeting with ASUU. If a meeting is held there must be an outcome based on the agreement. Mere having a meeting with the President without an agreement is nothing. And at that level the agreement must be written and signed by both parties. It is only those who are easily deceived that will be blaming ASUU. As an adult citizen of Nigeria I have come to know that our politicians are not sincere. They tell lies to the public when it comes to cases like this. I know as it is like this if there is no concrete agreement now, our tertiary education will go back to square one. Our politicians will laugh at ASUU and our Natioanl Assembly members will go ahead and be filling their pockets with millions of Naira every month.

  9. D fact remains dat hoodlums hav taken over our core values as a nation. ASUU leadership is partisan. Their project is brutal. Just same way 90% of dem rape children placed in their care. Their ring leaders ought to be rounded up, investigated & charged to expose d subversion in their heartless mission. When a child cries for too long people loose interest & abandon him. D current leadership of asuu lacks reason.
