Business activities were disrupted at Warewa Community in Ogun on Tuesday, following a stampede when a truck laden with fuel tumbled, discharging all its contents.
The incident caused serious panic and heavy traffic jam as traders shut their business and took to their heels.
The truck has registration number XA644 BLG.
A witness, Mr Akin Ojediran, who narrowly escaped death at the scene, told NAN that the tanker was trying to avoid crashing into a car, making u -turn.
“This junction is not safe to make u-turn at all because tanker drivers are always on top speed,’’ he stated.
A food seller, Mrs Mojirat Keshinro, said that she hurriedly fled her shop after the incident.
“I was serving my customers when I heard a heavy blast.
“My customers and I scrambled for safety, all of us wanted to escape through one door at the same time.
“Accidents at this junction are becoming too many,” she said.
The tanker driver, Rabiu Mohammed, said that he was trying to avoid crashing into the private car when the incident occurred.
The District Officer in charge of the Warewa Police Division, DSP. Shina Olumide, directed residents to stay away from the scene of the incident.
“All our officers are out to ensure that everybody complied, to avoid fire outbreak.
“We have also sent for the Ogun State Fire Service and they will be on ground soon,” he said.
Mr Ami Ganiyu, the Akute Unit Commander of the Traffic Compliance and Enforment Corps, said that motorists had been directed to use single lane because of the incident. (NAN) Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
