Plateau suspends LG election primaries in two councils

There are indications that local government elections in Plateau State fixed for January 30, 2014, may not hold in Jos North and Wase local government areas as the state government has stopped primary elections of the various political parties citing security reasons.

The state government in a statement, Thursday, signed by Secretary to the State Government, Professor Shedrack Best advised political parties to suspend nomination of candidates for the two local governments.

The statement read: “The Government of Plateau State after a careful study of the security atmosphere in the state is hereby suspending primary elections in Wase and Jos North Local Government Areas. All political parties intending to participate in the forth coming Local Govt elections are advised to comply with the decision.

“Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission is to note this directive and ensure strict compliance by all political parties pending further monitoring and consultation with stakeholders.

Government wishes to make it clear that all Local Governments in the state are being monitored and Govt will not hesitate to act decisively as the situation demands.”

Chairman of the state independent electoral commission, PLASIEC, Mr. Peter Dalyop had on Wednesday announced the date for the council election and a time table which political parties are to follow towards submitting their candidates for the election.

It may be recalled that the outcome of council election in Jos North Local Government Area had been a source of conflict in the state. The November 2008 crisis which resulted in a protracted ethno-religious crisis was largely sparked off by bickering over the election.

Wase Local Government Area was recently engulfed in violent crisis resulting in the displacement of many people.
