Muslim youths invade Osun school, beat students, teachers and principal

The new education policy in Osun State claimed its first casualty on Monday as fierce-looking Muslim youths invaded the Baptist High School, Ejigbo, and beat up the students and teachers.

The principal of the school, Mr. Layi Oguntola, was thoroughly beaten and injured. Oguntola, as of the time of this report, was said to be receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre, Ejigbo.

The attackers said they came because the school authorities stopped some Muslim pupils from wearing the hijab.

The hijab is a scarf that covers the head and chest, specially worn by a Muslim female.

Our correspondent learnt that the attackers stormed the school while the students were already seated in their classrooms.

They were said to have headed straight for the Principal’s Office and asked Oguntola to apologise for sending the hijab-wearing students away from school but the principal refused to do so.

Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola
There have been protests when the Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration recently introduced a new education policy, which entails merger and reclassification of schools in the state.

The Baptist conference specifically said it would not allow hijab-wearing students in its schools.

On Monday, the attacked students and teachers were said to have run for refuge at the palace of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyesosin. The monarch was also said to have been instrumental to the rescue of the wounded principal from the attackers, made up of mostly youths.

The attack forced the Baptist High School and other schools in the town to close abruptly for the day as police were deployed in the town to forestall reprisal.

Some Muslim students of the school were said to have been turned back last week for wearing hijab on their uniforms and their parents were said to have reported the case to members of an Islamic sect in the town.

Tension started building in the town following the attack and the speculations that the attackers were also planning to set ablaze the United Baptist Church, close to the school.

Some Christian youths were also said to have mobilised to defend the church.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, when contacted, said she would find out the details of the incident and get back to our correspondent.

Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sunday Akere, confirmed the incident, which he described as an unfortunate one.

He appealed to the people of the state to shun violence, saying the state government in collaboration with security agencies would investigate and get to the root of the matter.

He said, “It is unfortunate that this happened at a time when we are already achieving peace in the area of schools reclassification.

“We are calling on all religious leaders and stakeholders to refrain from taking steps which could lead to the breakdown of law and order.”

  1. Islam, religion of peace indeed!!! How many muslim schools will a Christian go and dress like a non muslim and they will accept? Why can't they go and establish their own school where they can be wearing their hijab or probably join public school? The mission schools were established with the financial contributions of church members that these stupid muslims are persecuting.

    1. Say ur opinion without calling us stupid. U are the stupid one here. Wearing Hijab represent decent dressing. Tell me where the Bible tells u to dress indecently. Jesus mother always wear Jihab in all the pictures u pple are displaying. Stop displaying ur ignorance and hatred towards Islam bcos u will not succeed. Pple bigger than u have been trying to derails Islam for centuries but they couldnt. So wake up.

  2. Osun state governor is jihadist but he seem to be taken this too far. Religious war is a dangerous war even the governor will not be spared. He had better watched it.

  3. Must you break the rules of a school to have your way? It is a Christian school, if it does not go well with your faith must you force yourself to be in that school? Are there no muslim schools? God will judge you. This is simply persecution. Baptist high school, NEVER COMPROMISE PLEASE. IT IS A TRYING TIME BUT YOU WILL OVERCOME IT IN JESUS NAME.

  5. West is a good example of religious tolerance but Rauf is trying to beat the drum of violence by implementing controversial policies. He is doing the bid of his masters in middle East. Baptist must rise to destroy this cancerous growth before it turns into full scale bloodbath.

  8. This is outrageous and need to be attended to immediately. Why do we need to set the polity on fire. Government policy should not be like this. Why bring sentiment of religion into the academic life of these young fellows. If Muslims need more schools build more for them. The Baptists have laboured to provide good schools for the populace and should be left in peace. The Muslim community should come together and build more schools as there is land more than enough to do it. Hijab is taking things to the extreme as the school uniform that is used from the past does not expose the sensitive parts of the body. Govt MUST address this issue immediately to avoid breakdown. May God bless Osun state. Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria. Toks

  11. All schools have been acquired by the government, no longer belong to religious institutions and communities anymore. What the principal did was right if it was not stated in any constitution and the youths who attacked him should be arrested. But in order to ensure peace we all have to be considerate and embrace each other. Is it the identity that is the problem or the pupil. He could have asked her to remove it and get into class. The state Ministry of Education also need to clarify the issue. This is a two way coin, if the "supposed" Muslim schools starts asking our girls to cover their head what would this turn to. Lets embrace peace and take things easy for everybody sake.

  16. And people are crying about Angola banning Islam. Violence shouldn't be an option or ways of making a point. Some Muslims just make me laugh sometimes, They want everything in their way both when you are in their space or they are in your space if not they result to violence. Can these people just park these crap in. Let peace continue to reign.

  17. Muslim and violence.... it is in their blood. Angola banished Islam in their country cos they want peace... I think we should divide dis world into two. Muslim somewhere and Christians in another place for peace. HABA

  18. Yoruba Christians this is what you have brought upon yourselves because of you the majority in west and allow your muslim counterparts to deceive to vote their members as Governors, 5 out of 6 governors in the west are muslims. Tribalism erased your sense of reasoning not realize that these muslims and their doctrines do not tolerate none muslims. They hate you to death and are ready to kill you even you are their blood mothers or fathers or brothers or sister. It is this tribalism that is driving you now to support Tinubu and indeed Buhari who if it is possible will want all Christians in Nigeria killed. Expect more and even the worst, this is the beginning, unless you people become objective, and not see everything from the spectacle of tribalism or sectionalism. This is just the beginning of tribulation and persecution, you what is going on in the north. Bokoharam does not no brother nor sister. They enter schools and kill children. Your muslim Governor brothers have started. As Christians your true brother is one in Christ with you. A word is enough for the wise. Start now to plan how you vote Christian Governors in all Yoruba states, do not allow Tinubu to deceive you, who will later force you all to convert to Islam. God will not allow this. If the succeed in taking over the all the christian schools, they will secretly start converting or initiating these young ones to islamism - Danger!!!. I learnt they use hypnotism or charms.
We heard how churches (Winners and RCCG to mention) in Ogun state are being harassed and embarrassed by the govt there. No respect to sacredness of church of God by these islamist govts.

  19. Well well, if this is the case then y is CAN fuming about Islamic Banking in Nigeria? Are the Islamic Bankers forcing the Christians to bank with them? About Hijab, I am surprised at Christians' behavior. Have they not seen the paintings of the Virgin Mary (Mother of God?!). She is always portrayed wearing it and I wonder y modern day xtians reject it. Or is it part of Old Testament promises made by God to man? Modern days xtians disguise under the pretense that they r children of God & as such their Father (God) cannot punish them for drunkenness, fornication, adultery, lies, cheats etc. Must Muslim girls appear nude as those xtian girls? This is indecency & Islam abhors indecency.

  20. Yes I believe we christians in the west must ensure we vote christian governors from any party, but not voting just because he is a yoruba. Vote any party that nominates a christian, supports and respects christianity. Our muslim counterpart from yoruba vote because the candidates are muslims, if not so why would Tinubu select only muslim governor candidates for yoruba states? Somebody tell me? We christian are majority here in the west. democracy is about number. This trend by this governor is to undermine and destroy christian valus and virtues in young children.

  21. The fault is from the Governor who decided to merger them together

  23. Do you want the ugly incedents that happen in the Northern part of Nigeria to happen here in the West, God will not allow that to happen. I am now using this medium to advise Muslim youths to stop this, if they don't want problem. We have been leaving in peace with each other long ago without any religion crises don't start it I beg you in the name of God.

  25. People are not fair enough and treat issues with emotion and sentiment. Please can you people commenting here tell me the amount the churches contribute to those schools you called christian or Muslim schools. Are the churches or Masjids paying the salaries of the teachers and the maintenance of the schools? Mind you there is no muslim or christian school in anywhere in southwest. Calling one school christian or muslim is an over statement because the Government has acquired those schools and d owner of the school can make whatever policy he or she wants because he/she is the owner. Please christian leaders in the state of Osun should fair God if really they know Him. I don't think government can go to any private schools owned by the Christians or Muslims and ask the pupils to start dressing with hijab. Be truthful government is the owner of the schools let him do whatever he wants as long as he encourages/promote morals.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 5 out of 6 governors in southwest are Muslim can d commenter substantiate this with evidence. About the issue of winners in Ogun State let us fair God, i know the winners church or redeem are not the only religion bodies that have lands there and they also charged an Islamic organization 6 million Naira for the land they have in Ogun State. Please stop using religion to score points, we are only deceiving ourselves and I know we can not deceive God. Let us always treat the issues with open minds for the betterment of our respective states and Nigeria as well.
