A retired police officer, Yakubu Chollom, on Monday dragged the Special Task Force (STF) before a Jos Federal High Court over the killing of his son, Victor, aged 33.

He accused the STF of allegedly killing his son, who died on July 24 after the deceased was manhandled by the task force personnel.

According to the father, Victor was arrested and tortured for “no just cause”, which caused his death. Yakubu Chollom demanded for N1 billion as compensation.

Also joined in the suit are the Attorney-General of the Federation; Chief of Defence Staff; Chief of Army Staff; Commandant General, NSCDC, and STF Commander as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th respondents, respectively, among others.

The father told the court that officers and STF men maintaining peace on the Plateau arrested Victor at his home just to torture and cruelly murder him.

He asked the court to declare actions by the respondents as illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.

He also sought an injunction restricting the respondents either by themselves, servants or officers from arresting, detaining, torturing, humiliating and killing of innocent Nigerians.

As Chollom says, his son, a professional photographer, went on May 19 to Jenta, Kabong in Jos metropolis, to make shots dof the birthday party of his friend, who at the end gave a car to drop him at his home at Alheri, Zaria road, Jos.

He argued that the trio, Ahanan Peter, Yawul and Chosen, who dropped Victor later returned with some STF personnel who had allegedly stopped them on their way back and inquired where they were coming from.
As they got to Victor's house, they started beating him using belts, gun boots and other objects without even asking him any questions.

Then he and the three others were arrested and taken to the STF headquarters, where Victor was beaten again, which resulted in serious bleeding, and no medical attention was rendered.
Chollom further alleged that when his son was taken to the STF Sick Bay, nothing serious could be done to stop the bleeding and when he was returned to the cell, the whole place was covered with his blood.

Father says, that very moment the officers decided to let Victor and the three others return home.

Consequently, Victor began to vomit blood and later died on May 24, from the injuries received from the STF personnel during his arrest and detention.

But when the case came up before Justice Emmanuel, Counsel to the STF and Attorney General, Mr Enoch Simon, asked for adjournment to enable him respond to the writ, claiming that he was already out of time and that he needed more time to do that.

Not objecting to the application, the Justice adjourned the case to November 13, for hearing.
