Jonathan under pressure to save embattled minister, Stella Oduah

The embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah and President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan is currently under pressure to spare the embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, over her role in the purchase of two bulletproof BMW cars by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, investigations revealed.

The people that are asking Jonathan to save the neck of Oduah were said to be telling the President not to mind the report of the administrative panel he set up to investigate the minister’s role in the controversial N255m luxury cars.

The panel headed by a former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Isa Bello, had submitted its report to Jonathan since last Wednesday but the President has not said anything about its content.

A source told our correspondent that a top government official from the South-East, the same geopolitical zone with the embattled minister, is currently in the forefront of the campaign to save her.

The source however did not disclose the identities of those who have been enlisted in the campaign.

He said that part of the campaign agenda had started manifesting in a section of the media where the content of the panel’s report was being speculated with a view to giving the minister an edge.

“There is no development on the matter yet because there is a lot of pressure. We know who the arrowhead of the campaign is,” the source said.

The President will be leaving the country for London in the early hours of Wednesday (today) without making a pronouncement on the issue.

He is expected back in the country during the weekend.

The delay in making pronouncement on the report is being seen as a way of buying time for the minister.

A top Presidency source had earlier told our correspondent that the President would rather base his decision on the recommendation of the panel and shun the report of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation.

Critics at the onset had said the probe panel by Jonathan was set up to divert attention from the armoured car purchase and to also cover up the minister.

  1. In civilized nations, when allegations of such magnitude are made against public servant, the accused resigns immediately even before the public sill say so. But the reverse is the case in Nigeria where convicted thieves will vow not to go and even if they are forced out, they based it as simply political witch-hunting. If GEJ should spare Oduah, it meants he is giving his supporters for the 2015 election more arduous task to sell him to the public who are already becoming frustrated with govt. It will be more difficult to convince Nigerians to support the president in 2015 if the likes of Oduah is spared since Nigerians are rightly or wrongly disenchanted by her action. A word is enough for the wise. GEJ please act fast.

  2. I can not understand why Nigerians have an expectation that is different to what GEJ would do in this woman's case. Excuse me Nigerians, the self-same GEJ that in one breath said Alamasia, a fugitive from British justice, is his mentor and benefactor, and in another, went on to grant the felon a presidential pardon in such a short space of time. Wake up Nigerians. Can someone please complete: show me your friends, and .....

  3. Propaganda news, where did you get your conviction against her? Did you read the Panel's report? Did the report indict her? You hired press stop mind-controlling Nigerians. You take pleasure in using all sorts of dirty means to fight those you considered enemies to those you support. Now your friends and partners in evil Gov Sule Lamido and his sons have declared corrupt and are being investigated, you evil news presses (worst of all Punch News) have turned away and are not reporting it daily as they did when a perceived enemy (opposition) is involved. This kind of political motivated, lopsided and targeted press war will not help the country. News houses or presses should be unbiased, and not be tribal and ridiclously biased in the course of informing Nigerians. I expected the press to come up and do the same thing they did during Oduah case. Corruption against the Lamidos are clearer than that of Oduah, why are the news presses and houses not talking/writing about, it as such a huge corruption case involving the Lamidos and Acct Gen. of Kebbi? Why are Nigerians not demanding prosecution? Some of these ones always requesting to be allowed to individually investigate on their own, people like Femi Falana are now behaving as if they are not in the country and have not heard. Hypocritical and biased Human Right activist - only when perceived enemy is involved. Just because these culprits have same interest as the political party the support, he is doing as if nothing has happened. I am still expecting and others - ( Dino Melaye) to start demonstrations for prosecution of Lamidos. I do not any way support any one to involve in corruption be Oduah or Farouk or Otedola or Jimoh Ibrahim or Lamidos, but let the news on any corrupt case or issue be done on level ground and treat with equal seriousness.

  7. God will catch whoever steals from Nigeria. Oduah was supposed to have been suspended if she refused to resign. Don't forget the saying of the wise that ''justice delayed is justice denied'' The action so far indicate that there is more to it than good justice. Dr. Tai Solarin (of blessed memory) was arrested for failing to carry his driver's licence and was convicted and fined. He paid the fine and resigned immediately as the then commissioner for public complaints in the state. It is like integrity has no meaning to many of us whatever the class. We need to wake up to the reality of the day and wise up to redeem the battered image of our beloved and great country Nigeria by addressing issues promptly and justifiably. May God save Nigeria. Toks
