I am still a member of PDP - Niger Gov, Aliyu insists

Governor Babangida Aliyu of the central Nigerian state of Niger on Tuesday denied media reports that he had defected from the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I remain a member of the PDP,’’ Aliyu said in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo, in Minna.

The governor said that he was shocked by the announcement of the merger between the PDP splinter group and APC even before a final decision was taken on the matter.

Aliyu claimed that he was not present at the meeting where the merger deal was sealed between the Baraje-led PDP faction and APC leaders. But witnesses said he was at the meeting, but left when the communique was being read.

Aliyu was weeks ago speculated to have abandoned the G7 as his utterances indicated a steamy romance with the Jonathan administration. He however issued a denial, saying he remained the leader of the G7.

Observers said his denial of the group today only serve to confirm past suspicions that his heart was still in the PDP.

Aliyu appears to put his hope for some accommodation with the PDP leadership in the ongoing talks with President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that he would await the outcome of the negotiation before taking a final decision.

  1. Is better for him to leave when the ovation is loudest because Jonathan will never trust him again. He suppose to coordinate the remaining PDP Goverinors in the north and work for their exit from PDP.
