'I am sorry' - Oshiomhole apologises over comments to a widow

Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo on Friday apologised for the comments he made to a widow in Benin during an inspection tour on Mission Road, in the state capital, a fortnight ago.

Oshiomhole said that he now regretted the comments which had become the subject of discourse in the social media.

The Governor, however, noted that he made the comments in anger.

Oshiomhole’s apology was made when the leadership of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), paid him a courtesy visit in Benin.

He noted that though the challenge of modern times had bestowed on the shoulders of some women and single mothers the status of bread winners of their homes, such should not be used as an accuse to flout the laws.

The Governor urged the Muslim women leaders to use their offices to propagate the essence of healthy living among children and women in the nation and the need to maintain proper sanitary conditions in their neighbourhoods.

Oshiomhole lamented that the challenge of widowhood had also exposed children to different temptations, adding that there was the need for society to be careful, to avoid unwittingly creating more problems for the nation.

He noted that money was not the best thing that guaranteed ones happiness, “but honesty and selfless service.

The Governor added that if Muslims and Christians were adequately committed to their religious doctrines, the world would be a better place.

He urged the women to propagate the message of Islam through the nooks and crannies of the nation, and to also inculcate the values of honesty in their followers.

Oshiomhole, however, assured the association of government’s support in ensuring that its present leadership made remarkable progress and also consolidated on the successes of their predecessors.

Earlier, the FOMWAN National President, Hajia Amina Omoti, urged the state government to look into the issue of the teaching of Islamic Religious Studies in public schools in the state.

Omoti also solicited for government’s moral and financial support for the effective running of the association. (NAN)

  6. Nigerian beware of APC and their style of leadership. They will do worst than that if they assume the mantle of leadership in Nigeria. Oshiomholle that rode on the back of the masses to become Governor is now against the people

  8. I can't imagine myself telling anyone to die even when am extremely angry let alone telling a widow to die. Had it been this was to be the UK i know that for a fact he will never smell any political post ever again. Gordon Brown referred to a woman as bigot and it cost him the election, let alone telling a widow to die.

  9. In any civilised country this man would have have quickly resign and been been totally condemned bt all. In Nigeria the opposite is the case. Now, do you see why we are in this mess. It is the people's fault for allowing such caliber of people to get into office and represent them. Wake up from you ignorance!

  15. That is the Nigerian Style, most of you talking here now will do worse if you are allowed to handle leadership position.

Do not criticise until you face and overcome a similar situation.

  16. Fine! it is a good thing that the governor apologize, but he should have done so directly to the woman and not to some group of women who are seeking for recognition. Those who were in support of the governor's statement should learn a lesson from here and stop supporting what is wrong.

  18. What is happening in Edo state is unfortunate. The masses that voted for oshiomole are the same people him and his agbero boys are terrorising. To the woman he told to go and die, God is the husband of the widow.

  19. I could not believe he said what I heard. Although people can frustrate one but the governor disappointed me. The governor just reminded me that he is human and no one is perfect except God. Mr. Governor, you can still make up for this, and this has to be well aired on air too if you still want to be politically relevant. Compensate the woman in question and work harder to show people both men and women that you are a good guy. When you get to church, also ask for forgiveness both publicly and in privately. I know you are a very good guy wanting to develop and make your state the best. In the process you committed an error. Sincerely I felt bad for you about this because I know you have a good heart. You are lucky for not being in Europe or north America where this kind of mistake can definitely cause you fortunes. Please watch your tongue. God will help us all.

  23. That was pathetic, oshiomole should go and apologize to the woman directly and resuscitate her. And he should repair Atte road before the end of next year. Lucky

  24. The Gov action is an insult to womanhood. Considering the fact that he is a widower.and even have a mother who is a widow. He should personally apologies to the women and compensate her. This is so so pathetic.
