HIJAB CONTROVERSY: Osun principal discharged from the hospital, explains why he was attacked

The Principal of Baptist High School, Ejigbo, Osun State, Mr. Layi Oguntola, who was beaten up by some Muslim youths in his office on Monday for allegedly sending away an hijab-wearing pupil, has been discharged from the hospital.

Oguntola had been on admission at the Baptist Medical Centre since Monday when the youths that stormed the school descended on him till Wednesday when he left the hospital.

The principal, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, denied removing hijab from the head of Romoke, the female student at the centre of the crisis.

He said, “The girl did not wear any hijab nor put any hijab in her bag. What she put in her bag is not even my concern except the content is harmful. I did not search her bag; I didn’t send her away from school.

“She was unruly and I caned her. I gave her a punishment to serve but to my surprise, while I was still there she ignored me and was demanding for doughnut from two of her friends.

“I saw this as disrespect and I caned her. This happened on Wednesday, November 20. The following day her mother came to my office and lambasted me. She promised to cause trouble in the school.

“On Monday, about 250 Muslims youths came to the school and headed straight to my office. They attacked me and turned my office upside down. I was admitted in the hospital. I have been discharged; I am okay partially.”

Meanwhile, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Najeem Salaam, has condemned the attack on the principal.

The Speaker, in a statement by his Press Secretary, Mr. Goke Butika, said, “The issue has nothing to do with the school reclassification exercise, but improper way of settling scores with the leadership of the school by some aggrieved persons.

“We should be mindful of enemies of progress who only want to subvert the school reclassification exercise that has started yielding positive result by attributing personal scores between some aggrieved persons and the leadership of the school to the exercise.”

  2. The issue is what are the authorities doing about this or is it going to be swept under the carpet as usual. The perpetrators should be brought to book or incidences like these will continue to happen albeit with fatal consequences.

  3. The truth is getting to light. "Romoke" may not be a muslim after all because what she was punish for was not religious at all. She was not wearing any "Hijab" nor does she carries any. She just went and call he thug friends to come and discipline the principal and now they labelled them "Muslim Youth". Any crime in Osun nowadays involving youth and schools is committed by the so called "Islamic/Muslim youths". All this is because of one person - Governor Abdul-Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola. All the lies would be exposed and brought to light. Osun is a peace loving state and because of their evil political ambition and bad precedents some are hell bent on disturbing and twisting stories to disturb the reigning peace. God is watching you and me.

  6. It's all lies -darkness can never overshadow light. The school is of missionary background and so will it remain in Jesus Name. I thought the muslims say Christianity is fake, why then are they desperate to mix with fake.
If you are so much interested, why don't you open another school then emulate what made them unique rather infecting them with your violent/disgust infested religion.
    A religion built on fallacy

  7. Me sef dey tin tire me. Hw in God's name wuld a man in his rite senses ever tink of makin such a merger at 1st. Wat communion has da light got 2do wit da dark? If dis so cald governor has no evil intention he wuldnt hav made such merger. If he was realy interestd in transformin da educational sector, as a gud leader nd 1 huh has go tot of reasonin. He wuld hav establishd new skuls unda da state gov. Nd enforce ol forms of laws. Instead of going 2 a baptise owned skuls, built wit da money derived 4rm various church pledges nd donations. Mergin dem wit an islamic skul, nd even havin da guts 2enforce islamic laws on a baptise skul. ABORMINATION, wat a taboo, Dis man is kallin da wrath of God upon himself,
