Gunmen Attack Passengers, Shoot Dead Headmaster And Cart Away Teachers’ Salary


Armed men suspected to be sea pirates have reportedly attacked a passenger boat along the Aleibiri-Tuomo waterway bordering Bayelsa and Delta , killing a headmaster and carting away an undisclosed amount of money said to be teachers’ salaries.


The deceased identified as Weky Akparakazi, was said to be the head teacher of the Community Primary School, Foutorugbene, Ekeremor council area.

A top management staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) who confirmed the report Thursday said the attack occurred on the 9th of November at about 9.45pm.

According to report, the assailants waylaid their victims with matchetes and other weapons, robbed them of their cash, valuables and teacher's salary.

The injured passengers were then pushed into the water by the bandits and the speedboat upturned after dismantling the outboard engine.

Those said to have sustained injuries in the attack were one Daula Garuwa of Isampou community in Yenagoa Local Government Area and and a former Education Secretary of the Ekeremor Council Area.

A source said the friends of the deceased were shocked by the development and decried incessant attacks on coastal travelers by gunmen.

“He was with us and visited some of his friends along the Imgbi road area. He came for the teachers salaries. He left and was in a good mood,” one of the deceased's friends lamented.

Contacted on the development, the spokesman of the State Police Command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said he was not aware of the incident as he was away on short leave then.
