FG inaugurates committee for Akhigbe’s burial

The Federal Government on Wednesday inaugurated a Presidential Committee on the burial arrangement of former Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe.

Akhigbe died on October 28 at the age of 67 in New York, United States.


The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, while inaugurating the eight-man Special Burial Committee, named Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, as the chairman.

Other members of the committee are Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen; and Minister of Information, Labaran Maku.

Anyim, who formally announced the death of Akhigbe on behalf of the Federal Government, described his death as a “painful loss” not only to his family but also Nigeria.

According to the burial programme released to journalists in Abuja by Anyim, the final interment of the late Akhigbe will take place on Saturday November 23 at his family residence in Fugar, Edo State.

According to Anyim, the lying in state will hold at NNS QUORRA, Naval Base, Apapa, Lagos, at 10am on November 20, 2013, while service of songs takes place at the same place at 6pm.

The following day, there will be requiem Mass at Church of Assumption, Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos, while on Friday 22, the family and body depart for Fugar, with stop-over at Government House, Benin.

Anyim also announced that at Fugar on the same day, there would be lying in state at Okhai Akhigbe family residence-the Anchorage, 1 Okhai Akhigbe Way Fugar, followed by Christian and social wake.
