‘Don’t work against our interest’, ASUU urges members

Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos Chapter, on Tuesday urged the union’s members to desist from working against its interest.

Ogbinaka made the appeal in a statement he made available to journalists in Lagos.

He said that the members should not allow their selfish interests to overshadow the interest of the union.

He alleged that some members of the chapter called an illegal congress recently but failed in their bid to carry out `illegal activities’.

“`Congress anticipated their plot that was borne out of greed.

“No member of the University of Lagos Branch of the ASUU is, therefore, taken aback on their action, “ he said.

He described such as an action as misguided, and urged ASUU members to desist from such.

The chairman gave the assurance that the chapter would remain indivisible. (NAN)

  2. The same government ASUU sat with years back and never thought it necessary to request for witnesses to be in sitting then. But from the experiences with the cunning and blatant liars in government, they now want witnesses to be on seat when they will be agreeing on terms. This alone should make Mr. President and his cohort weep because they have failed them. They are no longer trusted and their words hold no more weight. Can you imagine? A whole word of the President of a Nation not respected, and its simply because of His integrity. No one sees this but all are just raining curses on ASUU.

And I always say something, not until Nigerians understand that their is a BIG price to be paid for better life ahead, then you will never get there. Mandela and the people of South Africa paid their price and they have Victory today. The Arab spring came and thousands paid the price with their blood and most are free from dictators today. Syria is presently paying their price. Thousands have been killed even with nerve gases and who knows how many will still die but they are bent of seeing the end.

Tell me, Nigerians what price do you want to pay? This is just 5months+ of strike and even some weaklings are already pulling out of ASUU and some parents are ranting for ASUU to go back to school. Why?
Didn't you read the terms of ASUU and what they are fighting for? If the government start spending the billions on Education as ASUU is requesting, who will stand to benefit? Is it not you, your children and even generations to come?

My advise to those turning their back on ASUU, stop being a weakling. There is no Gain without Pains.

  7. Whoever is called to be the witness is welcomed. But understand that we need to respect the office of the President. Even if witness is called and allowed and the papers are signed and nothing happens as 2015 is fast approaching, will it not go back to be the same thing like the old agreement that was signed which the senate President condemned in its entirety and he called those that signed it names. He who fights today and run will come back another day to fight. However, if it is fight to finish then is is very dangerous. ASUU need to wise up now and act decisively. Sincerely the politics behind this issue is not open to all of us to understand the nitty gritty and hence we must tread softly. We must all cooperate to move this country forward.

I agree that a price MUST be paid before anything meaningful could be achieved, but who can quantify the price that has been paid and it is certain that you cannot achieve everything at a go.

Read between the lines, ASUU wants their salary and allowances paid immediately but funding issue to be on paper with assurance and witnesses. Who is fooling who? Toks

  8. Anonymous @ 4:11 AM, I am utterly disppointed by your comment. Reading your comment reminds me of the way dropout from secondary write their tenses. I can barely decipher the message you are trying to pass across. ASUU is fighting for a university that will produce graduates that will not write comment the way you wrote yours above. I have said it in different fora that when you pursue Nigerians to where a wall is, instead of fighting back when it is obvious there is no escape route, Nigerians will break the wall and continue to run because we are a great fan of complacency. We love the status quo, nothing must change if it is going to affect or inflict any pain on us. Christ had to endure pain on the cross for all of us to have the free gift of salvation. Even when the pain was becoming unbearable He still went all the way just to achieve one thing; SAVE MANKIND
Nigeria youths, parents what are we willing to sacrifice to have a university system that can stand at par with any other university system in the world? The decadence must stop. Let us stop the unnecessary abuse of the actions of ASUU.

  9. @Fadhy2k- I wish more Nigerians were like you. Smart piece. Please keep it up
@Anonymous 4:11am - Only GOD will deliver you. Obviously you need help. Maybe you should travel out, be more exposed then you'll realise that we have issues in this country. Don't insult people who are more enlightened than you. And please speak Good English (at some point you were almost incoherent)

@Annonymous 4:10am: Only God will deliver you. Perhaps if you travelled out and gained a little exposure, you'll realise there are a lot of things missing in this country. No Pain, NO GAIN. And please speak Good English. This is part of the decadence in the educational sector we are talking about. You were incoherent at come point

  12. Quite obvious that ASUU allies are its members............yeye ASUU! Now I see ASUU is now a political party on itw own, holding secret meetings. It ASUU were fighting for the future and the decadence in the universities, why again demanding salaries of when they were off, barking on the streets. ASUU, nigerian students have no hope in you, you should be scrapped. Yeye ASUU...only fighting for her pockets

  13. Two wrongs cannot make a right. It is obvious that the federal government failed the university system in Nigeria. The action of ASUU in engaging in strike action is justified. However, the ASUU strike of 5+ months is hopeless and blatantly unprofessional.

In civilised countries like the UK, Germany, Canada and USA, there are occasional strike actions lasting about 1 to 2 days. What use is a strike action lasting 5+ months? Whose interest does a strike action of 5+ months serve?

Nigeria lecturers and their ASUU should grow-up and pursue professionalism rather than engage in the current barbaric behaviour with the Nigerian government. Students, parents, the Nigeria society and economy are now suffering. The current ASUU strike is not serving the interest of lecturers because it is unprofessional and devoured of good leadership.

In civilised countries, strike actions result in good negotiations between both parties. In good negotiations, there is no winner or loser. In good negotiations, parties are willing to accept some favourable terms and some not too favourable terms. The motive of good negotiation is to seek a working resolution and allow for renegotiation another day while strike is discontinued. In a good negotiation, the leadership on both sides can continue negotiation and renegotiation while striking is discontinued.

ASUU should grow-up and show professional restraint.

  14. @Fahdy2k, I am disappointed in your piece and many people seem to agree with you because they are not enlightened. Professionals act and deal as professionals. When so called professionals exhibit unprofessional traits, it means there is a problem in their acclaimed professionalism.

Strike is a professional tool for correction. The ASUU strike of 5+ months is not justified because it does not serve the good of anybody in Nigeria.

The leadership of ASUU should cover their head in shame in their type of professional behaviour. A maximum of one week strike is adequate for bringing about any correction. If correction cannot be achieved after one week strike, it means that strike is not the right tool to adopt. The leaders can then change strategy.

Indefinite strike is unprofessional, uncivilised and belongs in the jungle of animals.
