The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday said the ongoing strike by university lecturers would be suspended within 24 hours once the new resolutions reached with President Goodluck Jonathan on November 4 were accepted.
The union, however, described the statement credited to the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, that ASUU was making new outrageous demands as “untrue and absolute lie.”
The union said it asked President Jonathan to facilitate the endorsement of resolutions reached with him and signed by high ranking government official preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent secretary.
ASUU said a representative of the body including the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, would stand as witnesses.
The union said it wanted the N200 billion agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund for public universities to be warehoused with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to the benefiting universities.
ASUU’s position was conveyed by the union National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, while speaking with The Nation in an interview in Ibadan on Wednesday.
He said the union appreciated the intervention of President Jonathan but noticed that some of the resolutions reached with the President were not included in the letter sent to the union.
According to him, the supervising Minister of Education was economical with the truth by not telling Nigerians that apart from the N30 billion earned allowances released for university staff, the government was yet to release the N100 billion claimed to have been released. ReplyDeleteif care is not taking, the university education of this country will become as we have it now in our govt-owned primary and secondary schools. In a country where almost all top govt officials, those who known to be god-fathers and churches have universities as their private businesses, in this type of settings, masses should know that govt actually want to batter our public schools, ofcourse no businessman will make or want any policy that will not favour his business. If this is not their plan, all of them will not be rushing to have schools. My people, i am not a teacher or lecturer neither do i have anybody as lecturer but undergraduate in university of Lagos and the only weapon we have is what ASUU is using, please, let us support them to fight this battle once and for all, remember! It is not how far but how well. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteGreedy people fighting for their own pocket
ReplyDeleteMr Odunayo we all feel their pain in this but ASUU has gone to far with this and stand the risk of losing peoples goodwill towards them. they themselves are part of the problem in the education sector but that is a topic for another day. govt has agreed to their demands and they have voted 60-40 to call it off so why the delay. Too many selfish interests at play here and too be quite honest with you i dont see why they should be paid for the months that they did not work. They should also see it as the sacrifice they have to pay for their struggle.Already some universities have ordered their schools to be reopened and if ASUU as a body is not careful they stand the risk of becoming a toothless body once and for all. If ASUU insists that they be paid for the months they were on strike then the undergraduates and their parents should also be paid for their time wasted out of school. i know for certain that some of these lecturers are the worst kind of people you can have teaching your wards in school. Is it the sexual molestation of their students or in the selling of handouts or even in some cases outright bribery in order to pass students. shall we go on. So pls let them return to work or resign their appointments if they know they no longer desire it and let others take up their posts. The man that lost his life Iyayo for the struggle died while going to advocate for them to resume so whats all the hullabaloo about
ReplyDeleteASSU is very greedy and currupt. They are their own pocket, they don't care about the condition of our university. I pray FG should not answer them
ReplyDeleteThe fact is that a lot of people don't understand the ASUU struggle. So they just comment arbitrarily. How do you call of a strike when you know that the government is not serious about their promises.? why start a strike on an unfulfilled promise and call it off with promises that you know from the start looks phoney? why will our dear president not ask a senior member of cabinet to sign the mou?so that tomorrow the document can be thrown out and then they have to strike again to renegotiate. ASUU wants what best for the country. Better believe it. Anyway even if you dont it doesnt change anything.
ReplyDeleteMr Wike, Mr minister is making stupid provocative utterances , l pity him, l pity my country, l pity what this and past governments have made our education system•
