Major towns and cities in Anambra State were deserted on Friday as the residents started moving from the major towns to their home towns ahead of the governorship election slated for Saturday.
A visit to major motor parks in Awka, Nnewi and Onitsha showed many families boarding buses and taxis heading to their ey headed to the villages.
Mr. Peter Nwosu, who was seen at the Nkwo Triangle trying to board a bus with his wife and a little child told newsmen that since he registered in his village at Nkpologwu, Aguata Local Government Area, he needed to go there to vote.
Though, he admitted that the situation was tense, he was not envisaging that the election could bring about any serious violence, urging the supporters of the major candidates to be careful in the way they conduct themselves.
The story was similar at Onitsha, where the motor parks were populated with people trying to get the last bus to travel to the hinterland.
Mr. Anthony Obi, who is from Agulu in Anaocha Local Government area, reveled that though he was not envisaging any violent during the election, “it is better I am safe at home (his village) than to be caught up in Onitsha.”
The state secretariat complex in Awka was deserted on Friday even though the government did not declare a work-free day.
One of the workers, Miss Ada Igah, who was seen leaving the complex, said that she had to leave early because she was detailed to be a polling officer in Orumba South Local Government Area on Saturday. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
