A former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State as a bad omen for 2015 general elections.
Abubakar, who spoke in Abuja at the premises of the Maidunama Sickle Cell Foundation on Monday as part of activities to mark his 67 birthday, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to buckle up.
He was responding to questions from reporters on the outcome of the controversial election, which was allegedly marked by irregularities.
The former Vice President said, “The outcome of the Anambra State governorship election is a very serious disappointment and a bad omen for the 2015 general elections. INEC needs to do a lot of homework to correct the anomalies.”
Abubakar refused to answer further questions on politics, insisting that he would only speak on the implications of sickle cell as a major contributor to infant mortality.
According to the former vice president, sickle cell disease is a major contributor to infant mortality outside malaria.
He appealed to the Federal Government and nongovernmental organization to speed up public enlightenment for the prevention of the sickle cell, stating that the disease was better prevented as it was incurable.
Atiku announced a donation of N3m to the foundation.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party has disagreed with its governorship candidate in the just concluded governorship election in Anambra state, Mr. Tony Nwoye, on the forthcoming supplementary election in the state.
While Nwoye is teaming up with some notable candidates like Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress and Mr. Ifeanyi Uba of the Labour Party by calling for the boycott of the election, the party’s national headquarters disagreed.
The party said it was mobilising its supporters for the election, which is slated for Saturday in 210 polling units across 16 local governments, adding that the best option for the party was to mobilise supporters and members for the supplementary election.
The PDP, in a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Richard Ihediuwa, condemned those working for Nwoye and advised them to start planning for the supplementary election.
