The Executive Secretary of the Anti-Corruption Network, ACN, Dino Melaye, was on Monday re-arrested by security operatives following the group’s recent protest against the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, who authorised an agency under her ministry to buy two armoured cars worth N255 million.
Mr. Melaye was arrested by police officers led by one Patrick Ejoh, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, and later taken to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command located in Garki II District of Abuja.
In the Warrant of Arrest, the police officers, who arrived Mr. Melaye’s office at about 5.20 p.m., said they were arresting him for “criminal intimidation and threat to life.” There was also an indication in the document that he would be charged to court on Tuesday.
Besides, the police ransacked the office of the anti-corruption crusader in an apparent attempt to get sensitive documents with which they will nail him.
About two weeks ago, Mr. Melaye was arrested briefly at the Eagles Square, Abuja when he and members of his ACN, an anti-corruption group, were protesting.
They had during the protest demanded a probe into the car scandal; as well as Mrs. Oduah’s resignation. They also threatened to go to court if the minister did not resign in 72 hours.
While the protest was in progress, another group of youth also came to the venue to demonstrate in support of Mrs. Oduah.
Consequently members of the ACN were held hostage for about one hour by a team of police officers led by one Sunday Odukoya, who wanted to arrest the anti-Oduah protesters for allegedly obstructing the traffic and disturbance of public peace.
Before he was taken away from his office on Monday, Mr. Melaye, a former member of the House of Representatives, representing Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu federal constituency of Kogi State, told journalists that he did not know whose life he allegedly threatened.
“Two police officers are presently with me and they have come to arrest me,” he said.
“I did not know my offence. The two police officers just told me that they have a warrant of arrest on me with a charge of criminal intimidation and threat to life but they did not tell me who I intimidated and threatened.
“There are two ASPs here – one of them is Patrick Ejoh. They said they were taking me to FCT state command.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteNigerian eye has mixed up the story of Oduah debacle and an allegation of threat to life of certain individuals. In an earlier publication, Dino Melaye claimed he was taken into police custody to protect him from attacks by pro Oduah group. You would recall he commended the police for a job well done. How come the same police would arrest and accuse him of a threat to life? It is most probable he actually threatened an individual because as it were, there is no smoke without fire. The same Melaye, the self acclaimed anti corruption crusader, and human rights vanguard had a continuous record of threatening his own wife.
