US ‘closely monitors’ situation of kidnapped American sailors off Nigeria’s coast

The United States of America said on Friday that it is ‘closely monitoring reports’ and seeking additional information on the kidnap of two American sailors off Nigeria’s coast on Wednesday.

Following an enquiry on the incident, the Information Officer, US Embassy, Abuja, Rhonda Ferguson-Augustus said the embassy was closely monitoring reports on the two sailors and seeking more information about the kidnap.

“We are closely monitoring reports that two U.S. citizens have been kidnapped from a U.S.-flagged vessel, the Motor Vessel C-RETRIEVER, off the coast of Nigeria in the Gulf of Guinea.” Ms. Ferguson-Augustus said.

The spokesperson explained that the embassy was seeking additional information about the incident so that it may contribute to the safe resolution of the situation.

Pirates operating off Nigeria’s coastal waters on Wednesday attacked the U.S.-flagged oil export vessel, C-Retriever oil vessel and took away the captain and chief engineer.

The oil vessel is reportedly owned by Louisiana-based Edison Chouest Offshore.

Piracy off Nigeria’s coast in the Gulf of Guinea has increased despite the efforts of the Nigerian Navy and those of neighbouring countries in the area.
