Nigeria’s tertiary educational sector has now been almost totally shut down with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, making good their threat to begin an indefinite strike.
The strike has now started, with effect from 4 October.
ASUP president, Chibuzor Asumogba told newsmen:
“Yes, of course, the strike has begun today (Friday). It’s still going on and no turning back till the Federal Government listens to us and attend to our needs; none has been satisfactorily met,” he said.
ASUP wants the Federal Government to end the dichotomy between HND/University graduates in placement and career progression; setting up of governing councils for polytechnics; a white paper on visitation panels to polytechnics and a much-needed assessment of polytechnics.
The polytechnic lecturers had gone on similar strike earlier this year for three months. they called off the strike on July 16 after the intervention of federal lawmakers.
The strike by university lecturers is in its fourth month. Negotiations to resolve the impasse have failed.
ASUU wants a full implementation of the 2009 agreement they had with the federal government. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDelete"intellectuals" adding to the nations problems. What has ASUU or ASUP done to solve Nigeria myriad problems. It is a pity bcos everybody is looking unto the govt for one or two things while nobody is ready to do anything for the govt. That's Nigeria problem. God will help GEJ to tackle this myriads of problems created by Nigerians for Nigeria.
ReplyDeletesymptom of end time. We need to change our ways.
ReplyDeleteWho do I support? ASUU/ASUP or FG? I'm a poly graduate & now a versity's student. HND & Bsc cannot be equated unless poly syllabi are reviewd to the std of its uni counterpart. Then most poly lectures are HND holders, less than half ve masters and few with PhD. Let this also be reviewed. Concerning the strike, let uni lecturers resume work and continue negotiation with FG bcos we want get the kind of GEJ/Fagge's degree atleast

ReplyDeleteI'm loving this strikes. I wish it will last till April 2014. ASUP/ASUU/NASU/SSANU U guys shld not call of this strike. Struggle continue, remember NO STRUGGLE NO SUCCESS(GSS BOYS ILORIN).
ReplyDeleteis poly and Univ established for the same purpose? Are the cut off mark for both the same. The lecturers in both do they have the same minimum qualification etc etc etc. I guess may be most of those poly lecturers are HND holders. If govt is to follows their recommendation it means they are not even qualified to teach in a degree awarding institution. Pls ASUP should think intellectually and ASUU should wake up from idleness.

ReplyDeleteThe political class have milked the country dry. All their focus is 2015. Yet people are suffering. Strike everywhere. Students at all levels have forgotten all they learned. And Goodluck says the strike is being politicised. Was the govt hypnotised when they signed the agreement? Why would all unions not go on strike when the political class is playing with our money and workers receive peanuts with bad condition of service? Yet, we're all buying from the same market. One needs to see the livestyle of these our leaders and their family members and then you will agree that our leaders are corrupt, greedy, stupi and insensitive. Let the strike continue.
ReplyDeleteIt is the BREATH OF FRESH AIR. Nigerians should have seen this handwriting on the wall when they were shouting GOODLUCK TO ME, GOODLUCK TO YOU, GOODLUCK TO NIGERIA.
ReplyDeleteAmerica and Britain can be said to have the best academic institutions. Why are they not going on strike always? Academics and research is Industry driven not totally dependent on government funds. Professors over there are too busy with serious research funded by organisations in need of result that will help them improve their products. What happens here is that many professors and researchers receive government funded for research lavish it on luxury, some take more wives and maintain concubines, others use it for traditional titles and politics and other vanities not related to the purpose of research,At last no results yet they continue to demand for more funds for this or for that when actually the acedemics are alsorelaxed and just waiting for the national cake. It is not supposed to be so. Even if politicians are all waiting for the national cake,Academics are supposed to be different class and that is why they are the heart and brain of any nation. They are the people who no matter what always point the way forward. But how can they do that when they are placing themselves at the same level with other people.fund for infrastructures are appropriated but even if it is not enough what are they doing with them. If one looks at the the environment of these universities one will weep. Is it lack of fund that makes the authorities not to even cut grasses ,mow lawns or keep the places clean? In fact, We all have to think and Pray for Nigeria. ASUU cannot claim to be what they are not.Even inside the universities see the dirty politics going on there at the expense of academics and excellence? It is all about, in most cases, selfish interest and in the end the poor hapless students suffer.God Help us all.
