The proposed ultra-modern city, 'Centenary Village' to cost N3.2 trillion - Abubakar

FROM LEFT: FORMER HEAD OF STATE AND CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF CENTENARY CITY, GEN. ABDULSALAMI ABUBAKAR; PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONTHAN AND VICE-PRESIDENT NAMADI SAMBO, DURING THE VISIT OF THE BOARD TO THE PRESIDENTIAL VILLA IN ABUJA ON MONDAY (7/10/13).
The proposed Centenary Village, an ultra-modern city within the FCT to mark the 100 years of the Nigerian nationhood, will cost N3.2 trillion, retired Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar said on Monday.

Abubakar, who is Chairman of the Board of Centenary Village Plc, disclosed this while presenting a report to President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House in Abuja.

The Centenary Village Plc is a public liabilities company to be jointly set up by the private companies which will finance the project.

The former military Head of State, who led other members of the company’s board to the Presidential Villa, said the Centenary Village would be wholly financed by the private sector.

Abubakar said the board had in the report also requested President Jonathan to grant certain concessions to the private investors who are willing and ready to be part of the project.

“Specifically, government should make the land for the project available with the status of an export free zone.

“Tax holiday should also be granted to the investors for equipment and materials to be imported for the projects, among others,’’ he said.

President Jonathan thanked Abubakar and other members of the company’s board for the work done so far.

He said the presentation by Abubakar was not only “fascinating’’ but reassuring that “our dream that we will get a city better than Abuja is gradually coming to fruition’’.

Jonathan said the centenary city would be planned in a way where the infrastructure would be centralised.

“People living there will not need to drill borehole or get personal cylinder for gas, and the management of solid waste and other environmental issues will be centralised,’’ he said

“It is a big dream but we are hopeful that we are getting close.

“With the board’s commitment and the commitment of government, we will get there.’’

Jonathan assured that he would consult with relevant cabinet ministers on the requests made by the company’s board before giving approvals and directives.

Meanwhile, Abubakar in an interview with newsmen after the presentation, said he was in support of the national dialogue being planned by the federal government.

“It is better to `jaw-jaw’ than to `war-war’,’’ he had said.

NAN recalls that Jonathan had in a broadcast on Oct. 1 to mark Nigeria’s 53rd Independence Day Anniversary announced the setting up of an advisory committee on a national dialogue.(NAN)

  2. I would advised before you jump into posting any comments, you first make sure you understand the issues. This is very clear all through the report. IT IS 100% PRIVATE SECTOR FINANCED! If some investors are interested in a project to commit their money to it what's your business? Is as if the name Jonathan invoke some hatred from people

THE EXISTING CITIES ARE UNDER DEVELOP, POOR, NOT MAINTAIN ETC AND THE NEXT THING A REASONABLE AND SENSIBLE LEADER WILL SAY IS TO BUILD NEW ONES. HABA OGA GEJ, YOU FALL MY HAND NO BE SMALL. AFTER YOU PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED ON HOW ABUJA SHOULD RUN AND YOU HAVE ACQUIRED THE WHOLE ABUJA, YOU WANT TO START ANOTHER ONE. GOD NO GO GREE FOR UNA. SIR, DEVELOP THE EXISTING ONES FIRST.

  6. I don't think there is anything like PRIVATE SECTOR SPONSORSHIP here. How long are we going to be fooled? GEJ and his cohorts are using this PRIVATE something to confuse US, because they know, Nigerians will definitely react when they hear the amount that will be WASTED to CELEBRATE a union that isn't working. Take for instance, when GEJ mentioned the billions they were to spend in 2010 to celebrate Nigeria's 50th Independence, we all remember how Nigerians reacted, thus making him to come down on the figures. I'm 100% sure that, he is trying to avoid inciting US by making US know he wants to waste our money.

  7. My fellow Nigerians, it is time we declare 7 days prayer and fasting for God to prevent GEJ and his Centenary Committee members from spending N3.2 on centenary village. Fast any 7 days this month. We are suffering from youth uneployment which is causing all types of youth restiveness. The rich are planning to get richer. Is it d masses that cannot build in FCT Abuja that build in satelite towns around FCT that will move to the centenary village. It is a white elephant project. Dear GEJ, I am your great supporter but please do not use this money as planned. Please let private investors contribute it and use it to build industries that will employ our children. When we graduated we had the option of working for government, private sectors or indigenous depending on our choice. Please do not dissapoint those of us who believe your name-Goodluck can really bring goodluck to our country Nigeria. Long live Nigeria ! God bless Nigeria !! Nigeria go survive !!!
