At least one pupil was confirmed dead yesterday while four others were critically injured when the wall of one of the classrooms of Ketu/ Adiye-Owe Local Government Primary School in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, collapsed on the pupils.
The incident, which occurred around 11.45am while the pupils were on break, was caused by a windstorm that preceded a rain which eventually did not fall.
The incident claimed the life of eight-year-old Quayum Badrudeen, while four other girls affected by the incident were currently on admission at the State Hospital, Sango Ota, where they were receiving treatment.
The four girls included 14-year-old Janet Salako, a primary four pupil; 15-year-old Bose Adamko; Rasidat Ajadi, 15; and 13-year-old Aanu Ajose, who are all in primary six.
As at the time National Mirror visited the state hospital yesterday, the four pupils were still at the emergency ward of the hospital while the medical personnel were making frantic efforts to transfer them to other wards.
It was gathered that the injured pupils were evacuated to the state hospital by the Chairman of Ado-Odo/ Ota Local Government, Rotimi Rahaman, from a private hospital where they were initially admitted.
Speaking with journalists yesterday at the hospital, the council chairman said he had to abort his trip to Abeokuta, the state capital, to personally evacuate the victims.
“Upon getting the information, we quickly detached two ambulances to the school, where rescue mission was successfully carried out by the medical team of the council.
“We were able to rush five of them to the hospital. But unfortunately, we lost a boy few minutes ago, while others are responding to treatment.”
Rahaman attributed the cause of the collapse to a windstorm which made a section of the classroom block give way.
Speaking further, the council boss explained that the corpse of the dead pupil had been released to his family for burial.
Rahaman, who visited the family of the deceased to commiserate with them, expressed sympathy with the family and promised that the injured ones will get the best treatment.
He also directed all school headmasters in the council area to ensure that any structure or object that can endanger the pupils are removed from their school compounds. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
