Protesting traders, under the aegis of National Market Women Association, Monday, stormed the National Assembly, demanding that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, call off its more than three months old strike.

The protesters, who had been at the Ministry of Education and Office of the Head of Service, arrived the Assembly complex at 11.30a.m.

President-General of the group, Mrs Felicia Sani, who led the more than 200 protesting women, said: “We are tired of seeing our children at home. We want our children back in school. Enough of this cheap blackmail.

“We all know what they do with our year-one daughters in the university. We equally know that they sell handouts and handbooks.

“Is this not worse than corruption of the highest order?”

On FG/ASUU agreement
Asked why she did not criticise the Federal Government for failing to reach an agreement with ASUU, Mrs Sani said: “Which agreement? How do you expect lecturers in state universities to earn same salaries as Federal ones? That is impossible.

“We are not educated, but you do not expect a hotel in my village to cost same price as a hotel in Abuja.
“They are located in different places. So how can a state university lecturer earn same salary with his federal counterpart?

“We are begging them for the last time. If we come out again we may have to chase them out of this country and replace them with so many jobless Nigerians.”

  3. "If we come out again, we may have to chase them out of this country and replace them with so many jobless Nigerians" Hey! Powerful market women. Is funny, isn't it?

  4. The market women already admitted there are so many "jobless Nigerians". Isn't that telling us something about this present administration? Instead of them to challenge the FG to improve the state of affairs, they are gathered for senseless reasons. Market women indeed!

  5. Yeah guys think about this, ASUU is also corrupt! Fine! FG needs to honour their agreement if they made one but on d other hand the women are right in some aspect especially on what the universities does to the year one(new intakes)students! This institutions levies them heavily, collects all sorts of money but what do they do with the money? Notting!! Are they(ASUU) not one of the bodies that preaches ' do not think of what ur country can do for u rather think of wt u can do for ur country' pls let's ask ourselves this questions

    1) What has ASUU done to help the institutions in their own capacity?

    2) The school fees collected by this institution from the students every session, what do they do with it?

    3) The internally generated money by this institutions, some has bakeries, water factory, cattle ranch, poultry, farms etc, all on government land!! What do they do with it?

    3) The Accommodation fees collected from the students over the years, what do they do with it? Cz most of the hostels are not renovated.

    4) The grants they ve received from PTF and other bodies so far, what have they achieved with it?

I need someone on this platform to enlighten me more on the above if I'm wrong. My conclusion CORRUPTION IS EVERYWHERE, DON'T LET US SEE ASUU AS SAINTS because as for me that's the picture they(ASUU) are trying to paint here!! After FG honoured this agreements with them ASUU SHOULD BE PROBED!!!.

    Malik.

    1. You said it yourself. ASUU is diffferent from the school management, all these questions need to be answered by the school management not ASUU. ASUU are the labourers while the school management with the federal or state government are the one making all these money except money from handout and blocking fee for courses. Even in some schools, handout sales are prohibited with reference to my school- Delsu, we all know what has been happening to lecturer who collect blocking how they have been video tape and Expose to the public while also losing their job. But The school management runs, part time courses, pre degree courses, SLT courses, satellite campus just to name a few. While runnig all these courses they employ lecturer to teach

  7. Federal government should honour agreement, once u knew it would be difficult to honour why going into it, that should be the question to ask federal govt. This so call market woman does not have children in higher institutions, they are motivated by the govt to blackmail ASSU, ASSU is fighting a course, they themselves are tired of sitting at home but they have no option to fight for the future of our children because if they fail, they will have to regret one day. Let govt reduce cost of governance and put it on education, any society that fail to give sound education to her citizen, its moving toward destruction. BE GUIDED
