The Federal Executive Council recently approved new measures aimed at transforming the automotive sector and ultimately put Nigeria among the league of auto producing countries.
The Chairman, House Committee on Industry, Rep. Mohammed Onawo made the declaration in Abuja when his committee visited the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment on oversight functions.
He said the introduction of tariff to protect indigenous manufacturers would increase the capacity utilisation of the sector.
“The Committee believes that anybody who is going to import a complete car should pay higher tariff than somebody who is manufacturing here,” he said.
He said that was the only way the local industry could be protected.
“The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is one of the most important ministries in terms of helping to diversify our economy.
“We are, therefore, calling on the necessary organs of the government to give special attention to the funding of automotive industry so that our economy can be better,” Onawo said.
He also said the implementation of the new measures would attract new investments into the sector, protect local automotive manufacturers and create employment.
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Olusegun Aganga, said the ministry would partner stakeholders in the implementation of the Industrial Revolution Plan.
He said the new automobile policy would fast-track industrialisation, create jobs and generate wealth.
“The new measures to transform the automotive sector is part of our Industrial Revolution Plan, which is holistic and based on areas where we have comparative and competitive advantage as a country,” Aganga said. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

These people are just a bunch of fools. Nigerians pay the most ridiculous duties on imported cars and yet they want to further increase it. They shd make a plan, show me a relatively affordable made in Nigeria car and I would buy it.
ReplyDeleteWhat has the Government done to transform the automotive sector that now warrants increase in tariff? Where is the industry they are protecting when they have used power failure to scare away investors?
ReplyDeleteEvery successive government have successively increased the stakes as they demonstrate an avid hatred for the people. May God save us. - AJ
We agree to that, but can we have a list of autombiles produced in Nigeria
ReplyDeleteIf there are, are they at affordable prices
GEJ and his men are fools and jokers of Highest orders!!!
ReplyDeleteOur lawmakers and the government as a whole are just a bunch of jokers who have completely lost touch with reality. What industry are they protecting? where are the made in Nigeria cars? They have not sorted out power and they are talking about supporting an industry that is yet to take off effectively. They are just mad.
ReplyDeleteIt is because they use our money to buy cars for themselves. It's so sad. May God help us.
If the government can lead by example by having its executive, judiciary, officials and parastatals patronize only the "so-called" Nigeria automobile industry, then no wahala. Not have the masses patronise the Nigerian automobiles while the government officials ride in BMWs and Mercedes Benzes.
ReplyDeleteNo power, no roads, no health, ASUU on strike, people barely managing to survive and all this government can come up with is higher tarif on Tokunbo cars? SMH. How insensitive can you be? All they do is inflict more pain and hardship on an extremely downtrodden masses, just like in the fuel subsidy saga. When will all this end? SNAFU.
Maybe the Armored BMW recently acquired by the Aviation Minister was Made-in-Nigeria
ReplyDeleteThis is death-trap for thus government. You don't bring up an economic policy that will alienate your government to the electorates, especially as you see general election approaching. Whoever advised the government to this effect, is a saboteur. GEJ be wise; the opposition is watching.
ReplyDeletemay God purnish all dos ppl dat seatted & concluded on dis rubbish,
ReplyDeleteamen
Foolish talks.hope there is no any other way to get money that they will use for 2015 elections?how many cars manufacture companies we have in Nigeria&at what's quantities are they'd produced?we all know disadvantages of importation goods, but companies of such we have in Nigeria?GEJ please thinks twice before increase the tariffs.since you peoples can afford buying new cars, why wouldn't increased the tariff.
ReplyDeleteThis Government is an oppressive, very callous and insensitive government to the plight of Nigerians. Do not mind their excuses, they are only looking for morning at all cost and that from the struggling Nigerians. (1) They raised the price of fuel, (2) forced Nigerians to pay huge money under the pretence of new plate numbers (3) Tax Nigerians again under the guise of changing Nigeria drivers license and now (4) they are asking custom to increase charges on the imported vehicles themselves. This is pure satanic acts and God Almighty will fight for the helpless Nigerians and deliver us from the hands of these oppressors.
