Some families of the victims of the ill-fated Associated Airline have demanded for speedy identification process of the dead so that they can give their dead relatives befitting burial.
The older sister of the late Mr Chijioke Duru, who died in the crash, Mrs Nkechi Nweke urged the Lagos State government to fast track the process so that people can take identifiable corpses away for burial.
According to her, those who are bereaved shouldn’t be made to go through the agony they were subjected to.
“I don’t like the protocol the hospital has put in place. I should be allowed to check for my brother Chijioke Duru among the survivors first. Then if he’s not among, I will know he’s dead and I can pick his body up,” she added.
Mrs Nweke, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State, said there will not be peace until she was allowed to check for her brother among the survivors.
“We don’t even know those that are alive or dead. We need to see them. The hospital must allow relatives to see the survivors. Then we will know whether they are alive or dead and then we will know the next thing to do,” she added.
Mr Yinka Alabi, the brother-in-law to a victim, Mrs E.O Alabi, said the process of identification should not be chaotic.
He said people who came to the hospital on the day of the crash said they saw his sister-in-law’s body but efforts made by him to be allowed to confirm her death were rebuffed by the officials of the hospital.
“Now that they didn’t let me check if it was her corpse they saw, what information will I take home? I came all the way from Ondo State and I’ve to return today,” he added.
He said he would like to know the number of females on board.
“Their list indicated two but we are not sure. So we need to see the original manifest of the airline,” he said. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
