The incumbent governor of Plateau state, Jonah Jang, said Mr. Lar passed away in a U.S. hospital, at about 9 am Nigerian time.
Spokesperson for the family, Major Adeyi, has also confirmed Mr. Lar's passing.
For the past nine months, Chief Solomon Lar had been receiving medical treatment in the U.S, and lapsed into coma in his last 48 hours.
This June, he made his last trip to Nigeria to support President Jonathan's second term bid.
