Akwa United prolific striker, Mfom Udoh, was arrested and detained by police in Uyo soon after grabbing a brace in a 3-2 win over Kaduna United.
Udoh told the journalists he was surprised that the Nigeria Police from C division Ewet Housing, Uyo, arrested him along Oron Road even after he identified himself.
“I just want Nigerians to know how the Nigeria police operate and oppress people for no just cause. I am a victim,” said the 18-year-old football player, who has scored 15 goals this season.
According to Udoh's words he was returning early in the morning from his friend's birthday party when the police stopped him. They said they wanted to search him. The football player didn't argue - the only thing found by the police was the food he bought. Udoh explained who he was, where he was coming from and showed his identification documents. Still they insisted he should follow them to the station. Which he did.
“I have been at the station behind the counter since 3.45 am,” he said.
“I don’t know why they decided to just punish me for no offence.
“I am sure a lot of Nigerians who don’t have this kind of opportunity to tell the world what happened to them would have suffered same fate. Is this how they want to protect us Nigerians who go on with our lawful duties?”
He has now put a call across to his teammates and officials.
