Nigeria: To break or not to break - Femi Fani-Kayode

Today a great protest is taking place in the Catallan region of Spain. According to the polls, 52 per cent of the people from that region wish to break off from Spain and to establish a new European sovereign state.

Later this year, the people of Scotland are having their own referendum to determine whether or not they will stay in the United Kingdom and, again, from the polls, it is very clear that the majority of Scots wish to have their own new sovereign state and that the Scottish Nationalist Party enjoys massive support. Nobody in either Spain or the United Kingdom has insulted those people or labelled them as ‘’ethnic jingoists’’ or ‘’primitive tribalists’’ for wanting to break off from the greater whole and establish their own country.

This is because everyone respects the right of the various ethnic groups and nationalities within their wider nation to exercise their right of self-determination which is an integral and fundamental aspect of international law. Exercising that right does not turn them into villains and does not make them any less patriotic than their compatriots who do not share their views. It just means that they have a different perspective and that they believe, as many believed before Malaysia and Singapore broke up, that the interests of their various peoples are better served when and if they go their separate ways.

They opted to be friendly neighbours rather than to be compelled to remain within the same territory against their collective will. As we in Nigeria approach the 100-year anniversary of our 1914 Lugardian amalglamation and, as the 2015 elections are fast approaching with both the northern region and the south-south zone desperate to take or to hold on to power at any cost respectively, we need to begin to ask ourselves some basic and fundamental questions about our future. For example, is our interest better served by remaining as one nation or is it time for those nationalities that wish to leave the federation in a peaceful and orderly way, as a result of a legitimate and honest referendum, be alllowed to go?

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

If the breaking up of larger countries into smaller and more viable ones is good enough for India (which broke into three), the Sudan (which broke into two), Czekhoslovakia (which broke into two), Yugoslavia (which broke into 5), the Soviet Union (which broke into 15) and numerous other countries over the years, why is it not good enough for us? Again, why should those that believe that Nigeria ought to break up be subjected to so much suspicion, ridicule, contempt and insults from those that do not share their views?

Some of the questions that need to be answered are as follows- firstly, is our union working? Secondly, is our marriage a good one and is it a happy one as well? Are we satisfied with what has essentially become a country that has been turned into nothing more than (with apologies to Chief Bode George) ‘’Turn by Turn Nigeria?’’ where each ethnic group simply looks forward to enjoying its time to control the federation and all the nation’s resources from an all powerful centre? Are we not meant to be far more than this? Is this what the founding fathers of our nation envisaged?

More than anything else the recent igbo/yoruba debate over the issue of the status of Lagos state and the deportation of a handful of igbo destitute back to the east has proved to me that we as a people are very different from one another and that our interests may be better served if we are no longer bound together as one. I dare to voice this opinion even though many Yoruba share it but will not say so publiclly.

Is it not time for us to begin to accept the bitter truth that our marriage is uncomfortable and unhappy and that it may not have been made in heaven or ordained by God? Is it not clear that each region or each nationality ought to be able to develop at its own pace? Is it not time for us to have a confederation of nationalities in Nigeria and to restructure the country drastically to give maximum autonomy to the various regions and nationalities or indeed is it not time to just break up and go our separate ways?

DIFFERENCES Many may disagree but one thing that I believe that we can at least agree on is that perhaps it is time for us to be courageous enough to begin to talk about these issues openly and debate them. We must not sweep our differences under the carpet and ignore them as if they do not exist but instead we must find the courage and muster the resolve to acknowledge them and understand them. As far as I am concerned, this is the challenge of our time and these are the questions that need to be answered.

Whatever happens in 2015 and whoever wins, whether it be a northerner or Goodluck Jonathan of the south-south, I see blood on the horizon and I see disaster approaching. Stark promises from notable players such as ‘’there will be bloodshed if Goodluck is not re-elected’’ do not help and are not encouraging. There are equally strident and bellicose murmurings from the other side as well and some have threatened that if there is a repeat performance of the massive rigging that the North witnessed in the presidential election of 2011 anywhere in the country in 2015, ’’Nigeria will burn’’ whilst another key player said that ‘’both the dog and the baboon shall be soaked in blood’’.

2015 AS KEG OF GUN POWDER

These words must be taken very seriously indeed and they reflect the thinking and mindset of millions of people from both sides of the political and regional divide. Worste still, whether we like to admit it or not, religion has now become a major factor in our politics with Christians being told in their churches that it is their solemn duty to support a Christian presidential candidate and Muslims being told in their mosques that it is theirs to support a Muslim. We are sitting on a keg of gunpowder and, in my view, 2015 really will be the year of make or break for Nigeria. Sadly, in my humble opinion, it is far closer to ‘’break’’ than it is to ’’make’’.

If we wish to avoid the road to Kigali, we must change our mindset and make the necessary concessions that we need to make. We must begin to think outside of the box and be far more innovative and adventurous. For example, why is it a must in the minds of some that the PDP must field a Christian as it’s presidential candidate and why are some in the APC of the view that the party must field a northern Muslim as its own?

These hard and fast fixed positions are most unhelpful and the right thing and proper thing to do is to completely discard them and attempt to find a presidential candidate that is a Nigerian before being a northerner, a southerner, a Christian or a Muslim. And thankfully there are quite a few of such people around in the new generation if only the system will be far-sighted and enlightened enough to allow them to emerge and run. Failing that we must open up the space now and consider the unpleasant assertion that the premium that a united Nigeria attracts may not be worth paying simply because we are getting nothing but failure after failure and sorrow after sorrow as our consistent return.

I do not have all the answers and neither do I claim that I do. Indeed I may well be wrong which is why I would be interested in hearing the views of others and particularly those from the younger generation who may see things very differently. Whichever way it goes and regardless of what we all think, let us not allow this debate to be driven by the uninformed or ignorance, pettiness, hate and acrimony. Let us not insult one another or act as if any tribe or nationality are a collection of angels whilst others are nothing but demons. Let us join issues and exchange ideas in a civil, restrained and decent manner without hurling insults at one another or allowing our emotions to becloud our thinking.

At the end of the day, we all want the same thing- namely, to put in place a system that is in the best interest of the Nigerian people and to empower a new leadership that will allow them to achieve their full potentials? That is the objective and that alone. Over to you.

  1. This headline is more attractive than yesterday's, now you'll get more response from people out of which you can by inference make your conclusions. (FFK, Try to use captivating headlines like this next time- an advice).

It takes a courageous mind to write and publish this simple truth but it is of course important to envisage the problematic prospect that the execution of this truth can hold. Let me outline little....1. What will happen to Hausa students in d East, Yoruba students in d North and Igbo students in d West??....keep the permutation on.
    2. What shall be done to Igbo people's houses in lagos, Yoruba people's houses in Kaduna and Hausa's in Imo?
    3. Remember the cosmopolitan nature of FCT Abuja, Lagos,Calabar and Portharcourt located in strategic corners of the cardinal points.

To mention but a few, it is apparent that embarking on confederation of our nation is so tasking, this is because Nigeria is a country of over 252 ethnic groups with Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba being the most populous and popular. Now will Nigeria split into 3 or over 252???
Will Nigeria split into 4 since we have the East, West, North and South?
All these are actually what we need to ponder seriously on before we move the motion, campaign for the motion, or subscribe to the motion/ this ideology.
If we can profer solutions to all these foreseeable problems, then it's not a bad idea "if" it won't consequently unleash mayhem on some people or lubricate it's implementation with our bloods.

  2. I must say that the challenge we as a people have is the amalgamation. It was the greatest injustice done to the Nigerian people by the British Empire. These are a group of people with little or no similarity in anything from culture to custom being forced to cohabit together, with suspicion for each other implanted into the various groups by the British to ensure that there will be no unity so that they will continue to be relevant. It was a strategy they (colonialists) used in Africa and worked for them; from Sudan, Zimbabwe, Rwanda just to mention a few.
In Nigeria, like some other countries we fell for it and ever since being at each others throats and with the curse of oil acting as a catalyst. I say curse because when you have something that is should help you improve your way of life and it does the opposite, then it can not be a blessing.
I weep when I think about this country. We do not have the psych and mentality to be together as a nation. We have just been pretending to since 1960.

  3. If we must be together we shuold return to regional system of govt.or better still split up.there's too much deciet in d system and we simply can't continue like ds

  4. To me, the only people benefitting from this unholy "welding" (not wedding) are the corrupt politicians. They toss us this way and that. They were the leaders 30 years ago before we were born and now that some of us have turned 30, THEY'RE still leaders. THEY'RE still the ones in charge. And they keep telling us youths are the leaders of tomorrow. When will tomorrow ever come in Nigeria? I have a solution. Let every politician who has held a a national position who is above 40 years be killed. All those above 40 who had served in a State Executive Council or the State Houses of Assembly should be affected too. The judges who are above 40 are to share in this. Let us carry out National Cleansing. But we can give them a lifeline by banning all of the above persons from politics. They can all retire and stay quietly in their villages. Then and after then, we should start dialogue to "unweld" the country. We currently have 6 regions, we may decide to split into 6 sovereign countries and start rebuilding.

The houses currently owned by other ethnic groups in other regions do not pose a problem. Visas can be issued to them, they can re-sell their properties and business at double its value to the government of the new 'country'. If they decide to stay, they can be issued 10 years visa to enable them recoup their investment and later sell it at its present value to the govt of the 'new country'.

Students can be issued a 5-year visa and allowed to finish their programs before going back to their own 'new country'. These things are easy.

The UN already has procedures and treaties for breaking away, meaning that we won't have to work fro. The scratch. Other countrues have done it successfully in the past.

AFTER SAYING ALL THESE, I KNOW THAT OUR PROBLEM IS CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION AND CORUPTION. THE EFCC IS A LAME DUCK, THE PRESIDENCY IS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT RE-ELECTION THA GOVERNANCE. THE JUDICIARY IS EVEN MORE CORRUPT OR INEPT, OUR LAW IS NOT BLIND, IT PEEPS AT WHO IS INVOLVED SO THAT IT WILL KNOW HOW TO WEIGH. OUR LEGISLATURE IS POPULATED BY BANDITS AND ALL SORTS OF CRIMINALS AND FARCROOKS. THE OPPOSITION HAS NO AGENDA, NO IDEA, THEYRE JUST A BUNCH OF AMEBO. THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS A MESS, WITHOUT ANY HOPE OF IMPROVEMENTS. THE CITIZENS ARE TIRED AND HAVE DECIDED TO TURN TO PRAYER HOUSES FOR SOLUTION. THEY CANT ASK FOR ANYTHING AGAIN FROM GOVERNMENT BECAUSE OUR GOVERNMENT EXISTS WHEN AN OPPOSITION IS TO BE SQUASHED. NOTHING IS WORKING. AND CLEARLY, THIS MARRIAGE IS NOT WORKING. I'm so furious. We need to split into 6 new countries. Period. Ubong.

  6. With due respect, it is the Yoruba people (the elite), as mentioned in Femi's article that are always thinking that somehow they will benefit more if Nigeria split. Why this notion is shared among the Yoruba is not clear, may be because of Lagos. But Yoruba must be reminded that no tribe/nation has benefited more from Nigeria's amalgamation and indeed the centralization of Nigeria's political system called Federalism than the Yoruba nation. Yoruba nation was a theater of war and killings and massacre with each sub-national units Ekiti, Ijesha, Ibadan, Ijebu, Egba, Oyo etc fighting for bitter supremacy. Yoruba should first ascertain if the conditions that led to and promoted these killings of each other are no more existing before talking about disembarkation of Nigeria state as it is. God bless Nigeria, God bless Yoruba nation.

  8. I want thank FFK for this topic, our stay together is not working if the truth must be told. When we come together to discuss the break up, we have creat ppl like FFK and many more who will cave out the best way the country can split without blood or killing. Every region either 4 or 6 have something ie resources to the small new state or nation moving and they will stabilize with time. Who said our past existence can not be used as business advantage atleast we understand each others language no matter how little. Let's break and have peace instead of few people taking political advange. By this all those spiting fire can now head their various region or state if they can. I too can see break up in very short time to come. I rest my case.

  9. The way it is and with the ongoing sweep of a generation of people clamoring for Freedom and change from all around the world, I strongly believe it is time for Pharoah to let go. What we need to do is seat on a round table and discuss our co-existence. A national conference that is being clamored for running over 20years can help us determine whether or not we should stay together or break our union. The fact that we split into different countries amicably only guarantees the security of lives of properties of our neigbours as they remain our kiths and kins. That you have a house in Lagos or Ibadan and you are Ibo or Hausa will not mean you have to forfeit your property since you now belong to another country. ( at least we have Nigerians owning houses & businesses in UK, Ghana etc)

We can agree to visa free entries for ourselves in the spirit of brotherhood. These and more are things and modalities that can be discussed at an SNG.

I still vote for an Sovereign National Conference.

  12. Story! Nobody is going anywhere! All these points were raised at Aburi, most of which were accepted by Gowon, & other negotiators, on the Federal side. Only for Awolowo, et al, to ask Gowon if he was out of his mind to have accepted Ojukwu's proposals, basically on a confederation, at Aburi. "If the East is forced to leave the Federation, the West will follow"! Then you turn around, and collaborate to whip the Igbo. You here now, giving us history about Russia, Yugoslavia, India, & Spain. Abeg, tell us something we don't know, Mr. Historian! It's too late in the day. What the Igbo went through must go round, then we'll discuss from that point. Ka Chineke mezie okwu!

  14. In my own opinion FFK I think it will be very difficult for us to split up as a country but SNG can still take place to discuss the decentralisation of the federal govt, our current federalism encourages corruption, the FG is biting more than it can chew, how do you explain the idea that there's a federal road in mushin lagos, mokoala ibadan, sabongari kano, akure osun, onitsha anambra, yenagoa bayelsa, how many roads can the federal ministry of works fix?let the states control itself and contribute to the federal govt, the federal govt cannot run effective rail system in all the 36 states, let the states run their show, again we'll discuss genuine diversification of the economy from oil to agriculture, mining, manufacturing and tourism, all these will help a great deal in ameliorating the masses suffering.God bless naija.

  15. FFK and his likes ,let me bring to your notice that the Igbo people as a section of this country his been maltreated in this country to the extent that about 60% of this country does not want an Igbo man to be the president of this country just for the reason best known to you all . Igbo people are tagged with all sorts of bad names in Nigeria today because of what you are seeing today which they had seen over 42 years ago .Again with this type of write up you are not far from proving to your fathers and uncles who have all these years(post civil war) boasting for one thing or the other they did to win the war. If they had won the civil war should you have been writing this way? The hidden truth is that the Yorubas have benefited most from the entity called Nigeria and they see themselves wasting their time in being part of Nigeria . Some people are waiting for the day they will tell Igboman to carry his houses to Igbo land or forget it ,we the Igbos know all these and we are prepared for it . It will not be more punishable than when Igbo people were given 20 pounds each no mater the amount you had in the bank. This was the advise your father or uncle Awolowo gave against the Igbo nation . Many yorubas have been saying through this medium Igbo people are bad and that is why they are being killed in the North but we know it will take yorubas another 40 years to know that your own brothers are also being slaughtered in the North . For now I have not much things to say to you than GOODMORNING.

  20. Thank you FFK. What we really need is a confederation with 6 geo political regions. The federal to be at the centre taking care of immigration, armed forces , federal police, customs, postal services ,federal roads and railways.

Each region to have their own policies which will be dictated by their own culture and attitude towards issues. Each region to have their own educational , economic and health policies . In that way governance is closer to the people. There must be regional police drawn from the indigenous people from each region.

The minorities in each region to be protected by federal might. A federal bureau in each region to deal with hate crimes directed at minorities. With this arrangement there will be less need for competition for who controls the centre. Have I made myself clear?

  21. Do you all realise that this person writing his so called essay is a man presently on trial for stealing our commonwealth and instead on concentrating on that, he is busy fomenting trouble here there and every where to distract us all. How did he become a minister in the first place that gave him the opportunity to steal our money, l would never know. Now he wants to dismember Nigeria and claim what others have built, well, it will never happen. Where would he find the money to pay reparations to those in Niger Delta whose resources have been used to build Nigeria, the people who were murdered in the civil war. All the money he and his forebears have stolen from the Nigerian state. Discuss what ever you like, the Nigerian situation is not on all fours with what is happening in Catalan or Scotland. Anyone who knows anything about European or more particularly the Spanish history or even that of the United Kingdom for that matter, will advise this attention seeker that such comparisons make no sense at all, it is simply like comparing chalk with cheese. In Catalunya, there are a number of disgruntled elements who fought against General Franco's dictatorship who have now overspilled to present Spanish democracy and are being contained. Uk decided to devolve powers to the home counties and now Mr Salmond wants to take to another level in a civilised manner. No one knows what a referendum may bring. The Nigerian situation is a million times more complex than those and needs a lot of deep thinking and honesty. The problem can never be solved by known ethnic jingoists writing some drivel and pretending they mean well. Go back to the utterances of this man in the last number of weeks and see where his agenda is going. Nigeria does not need this at this time. GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

  22. If we cannot co-exist peacefully, we shouldn't deceive ourself. We can resolve our differences by declaration of a total war like Sudan, Liberia, Somalia etc and whoever survives can belong to any nationality of his or her own choice period. There should be no beating around bush with different theories of peaceful division 'cos there is can be no such formula. Let's declare a total revolution. Since instead of positive thinking on how to develope our cherished country, our people are busy thinking of breaking up a country that had lived for about a hundred years. There should be nothing like giving anyone visa to live and occupy a place he or she thinks is not their country. All the properties must be forfeited to the host country. We cannot be looking back and forth. Why then the division if we still we still think and acknoledge some common benefits. If a Yoruba,Igbo, Hausa or any other person from another nationality fees otherwise staying or living in a place rather than his own originality, he or she can simply carry their bags and leave period. We cannot continue to talk rubish of our beloved country. Mr. FFK I suppose if u or anyone of ur kind doent have the antidot to move our country forward should not be suggesting division.

My fellow country men let me just give my candid opinion to this issue of staying together or not.It is in our glareing eyes that our politicians are telling us lies every day and for lack of focus based on hunger and deprivation in all strata of life we have followed sheepishly. For me,for us to make an impact in their life in a way of telling them that we are tired of them, the general nigerian populace should should not respond to any call to register as voters and at the day of voting all nigerian should sit at home. There and then they the politians should vote themselves, declare themselves winner then the international community will know that there is a problem here.Since we have come to the conclusion that this so called politicians are not ready to give us dividends of democracy,we should do uncommon things that will set us free.

  25. One and only solution; We youths need to terminate all the leaders in Nigeria, then u will see peace like never before and we will be one. Our leaders are sending us to fight against each other while they make money with it. The leaders are our one and only problem. Think about it because i cannot fight and loose my life while the leader remain, and the worst part is that they are all olddddddddddddddd, and i dont know what they will do with the money. God will punish them all for putting us into corruption and problem. If all the youth gather together and kill them all, then u all will enjoy Nigeria. Yoruba, igbo Housa etc. are all god people, we just need only education to be able to think and appreciate life.
