IN PICTURES: Police Prevent Governor Amaechi From Entering Government House In Port Harcourt

A police detachment in Port Harcourt has prevented the convoy of the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi from using one of the two entrances to the government house earlier today.

The governor's convoy was stopped as it made its way  through the Fortes road entrance to the governor's lodge by four truck loads of policemen led by several senior officers. An argument ensued between the policemen and the governor's aides as they claimed they were acting on orders from above.

The governor later came down to speak with the police officers who promised to extract a reversal of the order from their superiors in Abuja. The governor's convoy had to wait for 45 minutes before finally detouring to take the Azikiwe road entrance to to the government house.

Condemning the action, the state Commissioner of Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari told NE on phone that the governor and his guests  were forced by the Police allegedly on the orders of the State Police Commissioner, Mr Joseph Mbu to go through the main gate of the Government House. Describing the action of the state Police boss as an abuse of federalism and political authority, the commissioner said no official explanation was adduced for the action of the state Police command.

Wondering why the governor of the state should be stopped from accessing his residence through the private gate of the Government House, Semenitari said the action of the Police was strange and a violation of the tenets of popular democracy.

“This happened around 8pm this night (last night). The Police stopped the governor and his guests, former Speakers in the country from accessing the governor’s residence through his private gate. The governor had to go through the main gate. This is a clear abuse of federalism, power and rule of law”, Mrs Semenitari said.

It is not true — Police

Meantime, when contacted for comment on the allegation, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Angela Agabe said it was not true. According to her, the Police only stopped Governor Amaechi’s faction of the PDP from setting up their secretariat at 38 Forces Avenue, a building opposite the old GRA Police station.

The Forces Avenue road where the secretariat is located connects the back gate of the Government House, which serves as the private gate of the governor.

Another top security officer, who spoke to NE said the Police had to act on a clear instruction that they should stop any attempt by the Amaechi’s faction to set up a factional secretariat of the PDP in the state because there is only one legitimate PDP in the country.

The source continued that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Mbu had not been in the state for some days so there was no way he could have ordered that the governor be stopped from accessing his residence through the back gate.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Semenitari said a total of 102 former Speakers were with the governor when the incident occurred.

“102 former Speakers were with the governor when it happened”, she said.

The governor, who was dressed in a white shirt and a pair of white trousers and shoes, walked up to the spot where the three vans were parked across the road. He said: “You can see for yourself that we cannot go to the Government House through this road on the instruction of the President and the Commissioner of Police.

Earlier yesterday, Amaechi had received President Goodluck Jonathan at the International Airport and planned to meet with him later in the day.

The President was visiting nearby Bayelsa State.

  14. GEJ is taking this thing too far. I'm from South South but I will vote against GEJ by all means. We're fed up with all these 'orders from the above'. When will they ever stop giving out stupid and nonsense orders from the above? If a Governor is not free to use his private gate in his state, then we the ordinary citizens are done for. This is not a military regime and all the Oga at the top will feel the frustration of Nigerians come 2015. Jonathan we're sorry for your arse. You will be the first to be disgraced out.

  26. When Jona Jang faction of Nigeria Governors Forum was created didn't the president support it? Why couldn't he support the new PDP too? Has any police stopped him from using his private entrance into Aso rock? God will impeach him before 2015.

  27. Let's set aside sentiment, and be objective. This politicians are only occupying Nigeria with their self fish desire, and have jettison the people. Graduates are growing geometrically and the hope of securing employment is not in sight. How many jobs have been created since this administration? What percentage of young graduates secure employment every year? This is a TIME BOMB, that our leaders have failed to address. The youths are getting frustrated by the day. I am from south-south,whether you believe it or not, this Government has made things more difficult for the common man than ever. So much greed, insincerity and corruption, has made our leaders to lose focus. I refuse to be occupy by their show of shame. We are watching!

  28. Hey people look here, what we have now is factions of old PDP, it is left for the COURT of a competent jurisdiction to declare anyone of them illegal. As it stands now whether B,Tukur's or Baraje's are all factions of the old PDP. As long as both the new PDP and old PDP were at one time funding members of the party, they all have equal right to claim ownership of the party. So I don't see any reason why the presidency would abuse its power by closing down of the new secretariats by the aggrieved and estranged members. Take for instance, if CPC,ACN ANPP or any other party has issues that led to them having factions, would any of these factions take the lawS into their hands by closing the secretariats opened by the other factions? Why is it that the government of GEJ is acting against the rule of law of which he promised to upheld when he was sworn in May 29 of 2011. It's rather pathetic that the president is under pressure to act tough so as to prove to critiques that he is not as weak as we thought him to be. This move to stop a dully elected governor of a state to access his residence for whatsoever reasons that hitherto never existed but for the recent development is a big slap to democracy and the rule of law. We are all watching with keen interest what all these politically motivated actions and reactions would do the personality images of the key player after 2015 or say 2020.
