Forget 2015, you are ineligible to contest - New PDP tells Jonathan

The Abubakar Baraje led faction of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has advised President Goodluck Jonathan not to seek re-election in 2015.

The group said in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday that while the President had before 2011 elections promised not to seek a second tenure of office, its review of current state of the nation and pulse of Nigerians showed that his 2015 ambition will also not be in the best interest of the country.

The breakaway faction of PDP said this in a statement it issued in reaction to the President’s affirmation of his right to a second tenure of office as stipulated in the Nigeria constitution last Sunday in New York.

In the statement which was signed by Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, its national publicity secretary, Baraje led PDP said though the President is yet to declare his intention to run in 2015, he has given enough clues that he is working to do so.

The group recalled that the President has similarly affirmed his right to a second term of office in a affidavit in response to the suit instituted at an Abuja High Court by a PDP chieftain, Cyriacus Njoku, seeking to stop him from contesting the 2015 presidential election.

“We are worried that Mr. President is intent on running despite his earlier promise not to do so and in spite of the wise counsel of well-meaning Nigerians, including respected elder statesmen.

In February, 2011 while interacting with Nigerians and diplomats working in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Union (AU) in Ankara, Turkey, President Jonathan clearly stated: “I would have loved that the Nigerians in Diaspora vote this year (2011) but to be frank with you, that is going to be difficult now. Presently, the law does not allow the voting outside Nigeria and so this year Nigerians in Diaspora will not vote but I will work towards it by 2015 even though I will not be running for election.”

“Mr. President went ahead to add: “Four years is enough for anyone in power to make significant improvement and if I can’t improve on power within this period, it then means I cannot do anything even if I am there for the next four years.”

“This is a historical fact which Mr. President himself cannot deny now since he had two years to deny that statement but never did so.

“How does Mr. President want Nigerians and the entire world to see him for this volte face? Why can he not keep his words as a man of honour instead of allowing himself to be misled by selfish advisers to go back on his words, thereby overheating the polity?

“Mr. President should heed the advice of well-meaning distinguished personalities such as constitutional law guru, Prof. Ben Nwabueze (SAN) and Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, all of whom have advised him to correctly read the handwriting on the wall and stay away from the 2015 presidential race.

“By 2015, President Jonathan would have served our nation for six solid years.

“This, surely, is enough time for him to achieve whatever he is capable of doing for Nigeria.

“What else is he looking for that is making him desperate to participate in the 2015 presidential election despite warnings that doing so may spark a chain of events capable of culminating into the country’s disintegration, thereby bringing to pass the predictions of Lord Lugard that Nigeria as a nation by 2014 maybe history, which was later confirmed by the USA Think-Tank that Nigeria may disintegrate by 2015.

“Apart from all these, should President Jonathan contest and win by 2015 it means he would have spent ten years in office and will be sworn in three times as the President of Nigeria against the Provisions of the country’s constitution.

“We wish to appeal to Mr. President to abandon this ill-advised move and save our nation from catastrophe.

  8. These rebel Governors and their publicity secretary are all bunch of illitrates and their mind is full of hate. They are all never do well in their various states, especially Rotimi Amaechi who has decided to escavate all the roads and put such roads in Port Harcourt in total dispair. Do they not understand that Jonathan only completed the tenure of late Musa Yar' Adua. The President of Ghana completed the tenure of the late President of Ghana after which he contested and won as full fledge president of Ghana as at today. Rotimi Amaechi, I think your cup is full, be careful with your Northern friends.

  9. Where does contesting for an election by someone who has the right to contest under the constitution equate to a threat to democracy? If he will be a threat then vote him out at the election. What is undemocratic is telling him not to contest when he has a right to. These people telling him not to contest are sounding like the Republicans, Tea party and white supremacists in America who kept on yelling on Obama not to contest for a second term and made scaremongering their tactics by telling Americans they would be doomed if Obama was re-elected because he had not succeeded in getting America out of the economic woods when all they simply wanted was to rule themselves.

  11. If GEJ calls on God's name and breaks his promises, tells lies and does all the vices the Bible condemns, any Christian who supports him has joined him in sinning. I believe he told Nigerians he would serve only one term. Whether he has a right for a second term or not is another issue.

  16. Yes GEJ has the right to contest in 2015 despite the fruitless years in office but the question is, why is he preventing others from contesting?

  18. The political air space is large enough for all Nigeriians to vote and be voted for. Why all this noises. Leave the pdp and join apc, accord, labour, apga, pdm, ncp, just name it. G7 governors and all the rest are fighting for nothing. The court said GEJ can contest. Why use black mailing. Slug it out with him on the day of election that is all. As for me I know who I will vote for.

    1. Its a war strategy. Don't you see that GEJ is more scared now with this division in PDP that he can ever be with multiple opposition parties. Jonah doesn't own PDP- he is hijacking it and denying its real owners a level playing field.

  20. One should tell me the position of Nigerian Universities now. Is it how it suppose be? Let GEJ seeks his ambition by actions, not verbally. I suppose to be a graduate by now.

  21. I don't know why people are afraid of GEJ contesting in 2015, while the power to vote in and vote out lies in ur hands. If u don't like him vote him out and stop disturbing us with undemocratic statement from this barugu faction

  22. People let's get this straight, In politics you say what the people want to hear to calm their frayed nerves but act according to the detects of the ''the timbers and calibers, the contractors, the opinion drivers of all sorts, political sycophants etc. ''. We should not see Mr. President as having recanted on his earlier statements to do just one tenure, what has happened is that Mr. President is leveraging on the politics of necessity to seek a reelection come 2015. For those subtly calling for anarchy and by extension war come 2015 if their selfish ambitions do not find expression in the Aso Rock, be warned that our case will be worst than Somalia and Congo if we choose that part as a part of retributive justice.
My advice is that if you are sure enough that you do not want Mr. President in Aso Rock come 2015 go and stand against him in the pool but to stop him from contesting 2015 election would amount to alienation of his fundamental rights as entrenched in the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.I know what may appear to be your fear of contesting against the president is the fear of ''THE POWER OF INCUMBENCE'' then if you bring up a credible candidate, the president might have a run for his money.

  23. God, pls do everything to prevent GEJ from destroying this country. He seems not to be a blessing to Nigerians.

    1. And it is Atiku that is a blessing to Nigeria abi. Allow GEJ to finish his first tenure first.

    2. Yes his not a blessing, his a curse! God hear our cry.

  24. Absolute nonsense. The president has the right to change his mind about running any time. There is no provision of the constitution that prohibits him from doing running. The relevant provisions of the constitution are very clear and unambiguous. Why must he be blackmailed into not exercising his constitutional rights by a bunch of irresponsible persons who are being prodded on by a vindictive ex general and ex head of state who believes himself next to God in contemporary Nigerian politics. Ride on president Jo. you have the support of majority of Nigerians.
