Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kogi State University Chapter, Sylvester Osakwe Ukwuteno, has said that the ongoing strike by the union will continue because the Federal Government has not strengthened its vision for the sector.
Ukwuteno who spoke with Vanguard Learning via telephone interview, explained that if there are plans for the sector, government would have speedily concurred with the plea to innovate the sector being pursued by the union, adding that the pursuit of the union is to ensure that the country meets up with the international standard of education.
“We hope this would be the last strike that will surface on this particular discourse, hopefully if the government cares for education because we will not budge until our demands are met. The much emphasis of ‘no money syndrome’ is all lies as the president could convey over 300 entourage including himself, to China coupled with their allowances, welfare and other incentives, they should tell Nigerians where the money is coming from.
“The quest is not money motivated as speculated, but to ensure that facilities and other necessary equipment needed to update the students are made scalable for effective learning. Universities are currently operating with little or no equipment in the labs, making the labs non-functional for practicals, thereby sterilizing what is supposed to be practically inclined.
“It took Ghana a year and some months strike before the government came to their senses and the outcome is currently obvious, we would do even more till our request is granted.”
He therefore urged the public to join in the struggle by mounting pressure on the government to hasten up in its decisions because the students are the casualties now, but will be the benefactors if eventually granted.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, keep pressing on so that this issue will not be re-visited again.
ReplyDeleteanonymous 11.21 of what benefit is ur children having certificate but no technical know how.Lets get things right once and for all.
ReplyDeleteWell,Asuu should tell us d real truth about dis issue,FG released 100b for dem last month, dey re asking for 89b for dere allowance,so is it d allowance dey wanna use to rejuvenate or update d university lab or what?Asuu should tell us what dey want from fg clearly,if it is dere allowance or money to upgrade d university lab, building, buy motor for all d lecturers.we re tired of ASUU wahala,we don't no what dey re fighting for again,d other day dey claimed dey asked for 89b and not 92b as claimed by fg,so we need to no dere position before we intervene.
ReplyDeleteNigerian students, we should be patient with ASUU, they are trying to help us. Nigeria educational system is in shambles, apart frm private universities. ASUU is fighting for a better 2moro. I'm in pol. Sc. Department Benue state university, but I hate going to lectures cos it is so boring and uninteresting. No gud lecture halls, no public address system, infact we stand up to receive lectures, even stay at d window to receive lectures can u imagine dat. I'm even suprise dat federal govt is using Governor suswan of Benue state to neigociate with ASUU, who doesn't hv d interest of d poor student at heart. Even if it takes Asuu one year to achieve dis issue, I don't care. Nigerian education should be made standard. I urge great Nigerian student to work with Asuu becos most of d gruduate out there don't really no wot they study in skool. We should stop dis Nigerian mindset of SUFFERING AND SMILLING. Are d youths still leaders of tomorrow?
