EPL: Terry strike gives Chelsea draw

A second-half goal by John Terry gave Chelsea a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in a hard-fought London derby at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

The draw left Spurs alone atop the Barclays Premier League with 13 points in six matches, pending the outcome of Arsenal's visit to Swansea later on Saturday. Chelsea have 11 points after six games.

Icelandic midfielder Gyfli Sigurdsson got Spurs on the scoresheet in the 19th minute, left-footing a shot from the centre of the box into the net after collecting the ball from Roberto Soldado.

The visitors had a solid chance in injury time at the end of the half but captain John Terry headed a Ramires cross high and wide.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho looked to shake things up at the start of the second half by bringing on Juan Mata in place of Jon Obi Mikel.

Mata rewarded his skipper by delivering an enticing free kick, which John Terry headed into the bottom left corner of the net in the 65th minute. It was Chelsea's first goal away from home this season.

Terry has now scored eight goals more than any other defender in the history of the Premier League.

Fernando Torres, getting a rare start, was a non-factor in the first half but gave Spurs fits in the second half before being red-carded at 82 minutes after an altercation with Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen

Spurs had entered the contest looking for just their fourth Premier League win over Chelsea in 42 meetings since the competition's inception in 1992.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas, who worked under Mourinho at Chelsea during his Portuguese compatriot's first spell at Stamford Bridge from 2004-07, has played down talk of a title challenge.

"What is happening to us now puts us in a positive mood, but it can change very, very quickly," he said. "At the moment we are on a good run, but there are no clubs on maximum points and this year will be very tight at the top."
