WATCH VIDEO: DRAMA In Edo State! As Teacher Of Over 20 Years Experience Can’t Read

It was a drama of sorts during the verification exercise of primary school teachers’ certificates in Edo State on tuesday as one of the teachers in the state, Mrs. Augusta Odemwingie, could not read a sworn affidavit she tendered as part of her credentials.

Mrs. Odemwingie teaches at Asologun Primary School, Ikpoba Okha local government area of Benin City, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who paid an unscheduled visit to the State Staff Training Centre venue of the exercise was appalled that a teacher could not read, saying “if you can’t read, what do you teach the pupils? What do you write on the board?”

The Chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Patrick Ikosimi, who was also at the screening to monitor the exercise, said the woman’s failure was “an embarrassment.”
On arrival at the centre, the governor took time to peruse some of the teachers’ credentials and documents presented.\

When Mrs. Odenwingie took her turn during the exercise, the governor who listened to her defence asked her to read the affidavit she presented.

She stuttered and read the affidavit as if a kindergarten was learning to read, to the consternation of everybody around.

You will notice the presence of the popular 'Grammar King' Patrick Obahiagbon at the back laughing out loud.

  11. I think I agree with u. An independent investigation shd be conducted to ascertain her true literacy status, and then we can be fair judges.

  14. As much as i approve of what the Governor is doing for the state, publicly insulting an elderly woman. how does he think the woman will forever see him?
i think there should be more subtle ways of discipline and not this open display of shame. even a corporal in the military cant be this disgraced in the open

  15. As much as i approve of the good works of the Governor, this is no way to fish out bad eggs from the service. how does he want that lady to feel? please we should be more discrete with the way things are done.

    1. Dear Mr/Mrs/Miss Ugochukwu,
D day u stop been sentimental about issues, d day evrythg will be in d right other. U r blaming d governor abi? Does he knw she doesn't knw how to read? How was he suppose to knw she can't even read out d certificate she presented? Let's stop adding sentiments to issues, let's be straight 4ward and fair in judgmnt. Most of dis teachers can't speak 1 correct sentence, not to talk of writing it down or even writing out. I'm a secondary school teacher so I knw wat I'm saying

  17. FARE AND INFERIORITY COMPLEX CAN LEADS TO THAT. that is the truth. The villagers and the governors are far apart. Tell the governor to send the area education officer,,, then the teacher will read the text clearly.

  18. Northerner @11.12 a.m, at least many southern women can even read at all, even if with mistakes. Majority of your women can't even read "A", not to talk of mistake. How many girls do you allow to go to school, when you'd have married them off to Yerima types at 9yrs, and discarded them at 14yrs, after they are afflicted with VVF, making them leak urine, & faeces from their private parts. You can write rubbish here. Don't even start.

  23. Many reasons an adult may not be able to read fluently, could be dyslexic among others, that does not mean the adult is unintelligent. In this particulates case, the environment may not haven helped, with the Governor and a large retinue breathing down the knocks of participants.
